    Write Your Legislator

    During the legislative session, HFI will send out Action Alerts requesting you contact your representative on proposed legislation. This will often involve a quick phone call or simple email. This shouldn’t be the only time you are in contact with your legislator. Taking time to develop a relationship with your elected official off season will allow you the opportunity develop an open line of communication based on mutual respect.

    How to Write Your Legislator

    Elected officials care what their mail says. A logical, courteous letter carries weight; it can change a legislator’s mind, particularly when the legislator is wavering on an issue. It is important that your message be written as effectively as possible.
    Here are a few points:

    • Keep it brief.  Be as brief as possible, but don’t sacrifice clarity and completeness. Two pages is a maximum but one page is best. While form letters tend to be easy to use it better to use your own words. HFI will always present you with key ideas and a sample letter to help you create a personalized letter.
    • Identify yourself.  Let your legislators know that you live and/or work in their district.
    • Keep it focused.  Limit the correspondence to one subject. Otherwise, you decrease the force of your argument and complicate your legislator’s efforts to act.
    • Get to the point.  State your purpose at the outset and use the remainder of the letter to expand your views. Create a simple bullet pointed list within the first paragraph of the reasons you are for/against proposed legislation. Be constructive suggesting alternatives or better solutions, if possible. Use a simple bulleted pointed list to make it easy for the legislator to identify your points. A few strong, well thought out points will be more influential than a long laundry list of reasons.
    • Use facts.  Issues you write about may be emotion-laden, but beware of the nonfactual argument. It will make your legislator less willing to consider your point next time, too.
    • Relate it to home.  Emphasize the effect of the legislation in question on your legislator’s own constituency districts. Give facts and illustrations – use your own knowledge and experience to inform the legislator. Legislators seldom change their decisions because of a philosophical argument but well-reasoned examples carry tremendous weight.
    • Provide background as needed.  Don’t assume that a legislator is as well informed as you about a problem. A legislator can’t keep abreast of everything. Explain the situation, what you think and why.
    • Make specific recommendations. 
    • Keep it positive.  Your attitude is important. A polite, positive-sounding letter is more likely to impress than one that is negative, rude, or threatening. Avoid being antagonistic. Point out the benefits of your position.
    • Close with a friendly appeal, regardless of the action you urge. Thank them for their help and consideration. “Sincerely,” is an appropriate closing.
    • Allow for follow-up. Include contact information and offer to act as a resource should the legislator (or staff) have questions or need additional information. Include your full name, address, your district (find your district here – https://legislature.idaho.gov/who’smylegislator.htm), Where appropriate, indicate in the letter that you will follow up with a phone call

    Action Alert: “National Call-In Day” for vaccine safety and reform

    March 30th is being announced as a national call-in day for vaccine safety and reform! Revolution For Truth, in partnership with the World Mercury Project and other organizations seeking to protect the lives of children, are inviting all concerned parties to join the call-in (see call-in numbers below) or join the live march in Washington D.C. (see the rally schedule).

It has been more than two years since Dr. Thompson came forward and acknowledged that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) threw away scientific results that showed a connection between vaccines and autism. By colluding with the pharmaceutical industry, thousands, if not millions, of children have developed autism. One in 68 children now has autism. It is time for Dr. William Thompson to speak to the American people and for the leaders of the CDC to be prosecuted. Autism should be declared a national emergency and a higher priority.”

    **If you’re leaving a message on an answering machine, provide your phone number or email address so that the office can get back to you.

    **Don’t be disappointed if you do not reach your member of congress directly. You will most likely talk to a receptionist or be asked to leave a voicemail. That is okay. All calls from constituents are tallied. The fact that you are their constituent and are taking the time to call is what it’s all about.

    HFI: BOMBS in IDAHO? By Whose Authorization? WHY NO NOTIFICATION? “300 yards from this swingset next to my house there were 2 cyanide bombs. It kills anything. It almost killed my child and it did kill my dog,” Mark said. “I don’t want it to kill my neighbors.”

    POCATELLO, ID –


    The family of a teenage boy sprayed by a cyanide explosive that killed their dog is outraged they weren’t told the device was planted near their home, reports East Idaho News.

    Canyon Mansfield, 14, went on a walk Thursday afternoon with his family’s 3-year-old yellow Labrador, Casey, on a hill behind their Pocatello home on Buck Skin Road.

    “I see this little pipe that looked like a sprinkler sticking out of the ground,” Canyon told EastIdahoNews.com. “I go over and touch it. Then it makes a pop sound and it spews orange gas everywhere.”

    The orange gas was cyanide, and it sprayed into Canyon’s left eye and on his clothing.

    The teen grabbed some snow and washed his eye out but then realized Casey was having problems.

    “I look over and see him having a seizure,” Canyon said, holding back tears. “I ran over and he had these glassy eyes. He couldn’t see me, and he had this red stuff coming out of his mouth.”

    Canyon ran down the hill and inside the house to his mother.

    “He said, ‘Mom, Mom, there’s something wrong with Casey,’” Theresa Mansfield recalled. “We ran back outside and up the hill and by the time we got there, Casey had died.”

    Theresa called the police and then contacted her husband, Mark, who is a medical doctor.

    “I hurried home, and the first thing I did was try to resuscitate the dog,” Mark Mansfield said. “Unfortunately I exposed myself to cyanide and had no idea.”

    It took hours after emergency crews arrived and help from multiple agencies to learn Casey had died from exposure to an M-44.

    M-44s are spring-activated devices that release cyanide when they are activated through upward pressure or pulling. The US Department of Agriculture uses the devices to control coyotes and other predators.

    “We didn’t know anything about it. No neighborhood notifications and our local authorities didn’t know anything about them,” Mark said. “The sheriff deputies who went up there didn’t even know what a cyanide bomb was.”

    The Mansfields have lived in their home nearly 10 years and have never seen M-44s in their neighborhood. They say the one triggered Thursday was planted on the borderline of their property.

    “We weren’t aware, and nobody told us,” Theresa said. “There was nothing posted up on the hill saying to beware or be careful.”

    Canyon was rushed to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment and his family said they and Bannock County sheriff deputies who responded to their home had blood drawn to make sure they were OK.

    On Friday, US Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services told EastIdahoNews.com this is the first unintentional discharge of an M-44 in Idaho since 2014.

    “Wildlife Services understands the close bonds between people and their pets and sincerely regrets such losses,” R. Andre Bell, a spokesman for the US Department of Agriculture, said in a statement. “Wildlife Services has removed M-44s in that immediate area … and is completing a thorough review of the circumstances of this incident … to determine whether improvements can be made to reduce the likelihood of similar occurrences happening in the future.”

    The clothes Canyon was wearing when the explosive went off now sit in a sealed plastic bag since the Mansfields are unsure what to do with them.

    “We couldn’t even have a proper burial for Casey because we didn’t know how to deal with cyanide,” Theresa said. “No one knows how to deal with cyanide.”

    The Mansfields said, as of Friday, nobody from the US Department of Agriculture has contacted them to apologize for what happened. They wonder if other explosives may be hidden in the hills surrounding their home.

    “If you plant bombs by our house, just tell us,” Canyon said. “By the grace of God I’m still alive.”

    His parents say they hope no other family has to endure what they’ve been through.

    Theresa added, “Canyon is lucky to be alive. Thank God. Thank God that he is OK.”

    This bill’s Statement of Purpose:

    ..the child shall not be deemed to be neglected unless the failure to receive medical treatment is likely to result in serious permanent injury or death, and in determining whether such child has been neglected, the court shall consider the wishes of the child.

    Before we allow the wording of our state code to be changed in regard to child neglect, we must understand the legal definitions and ramifications of each and every word in statute. We need to understand how a court would interpret the following terms and phrases from SB 1182.

    • ”medical treatment” – what is the definition of this? Would this include only treatment from a licensed physician? What about a parent who wants the opinion of multiple care providers? What treatments does this phrase include? Acupuncture? IV vitamin therapy? Or only pharmaceutical products?
    • ”likely to result in serious permanent injury or death” – what does ‘likely’ mean? A certain percentage of likelihood? What is that percentage? And what is the legal definition of ‘serious permanent injury’?
    • ”in determining neglect, court shall consider the wishes of the child.” – at what age and/or level of consciousness does a child become able to participate in the decision-making for their care and/or determine whether they were ‘neglected’?

    Those advocating for this change in statute argue ‘Children DIE when they don’t receive medical treatment.’

    In changing the definition of neglect, parents who choose alternative means of treatment for their children will be accused of neglect, so that their sick child can be forced into State Approved Medical Treatment.

    This bill falsely assumes that medical treatment is black and white as if it was as is as go to the doctor, get healed.
    Medical diagnosis and treatment options are never black and white. They are complicated and multifaceted procedures that carry risks.
    Parents have the responsibility AND THE GOD GIVEN RIGHT to consider risks in their choice of medical treatments. 

    Medical treatment does NOT always prevent permanent injury and death, in fact many times it causes those.

    Here in Idaho, seven month old August Elliot was a victim of medical treatment error at St Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls. August had a heart condition that caused an elevated heart rate. The ailment is rarely life-threatening and was being controlled with medication.  His parents had faith in modern medical treatments and brought him to hospital believing that the doctors and nurses would provide appropriate care for their son.
    Accidently a nurse treating 7-month-old August administered an adult dose of medication.

    This medical error killed August. The baby’s nurse was not prosecuted because his intent was not to harm or kill the precious child.
    Are we holding parents to a different standard?

    1182 is said to be necessary to save the lives of our children. What if the change of code was in effect before August’s parents made that fateful decision to allow his admission to St Luke’s for medical treatment? What if this young couple decided to use alternative or natural means to treat their son that day?

    Under this new definition of child neglect, August’s parent’s choices would be labeled as neglectful. Their baby would be removed from their care to receive the mandated State approved medical treatment that would ultimately take his life.  

    Would SB 1182 save baby August’s life? No.
    But it would destory his family. Once accused of neglect, CPS would have even greater authority to remove August’s brothers from their family. Nothing could be more damaging than the government tearing apart a loving family whose intent was to do what they believed best for their sick child.

    What if we apply this definition change to the infants death of 2013.

    82 newborn infants died.
    77 died AFTER receiving medical treatment.
    It is reported that five newborns deaths could have been prevented with proper and timely medical treatment.

    However, these babies born at home and died as newborns in the arms of their mothers.

    If this statute had been in place, how would their deaths be prevented?

    Where is the evidence that this would this amendment to Idaho code would have saved the lives of our children?

    There is a very real move on the part of our Child Protective community to remove parental right to the choice of health care treatment options for their children. This statute change would increase their authority to remove children based on personal opinion that courts should mandate a specific method of care.

    Once you think of glyphosate insinuating itself into collagen, it’s an easy step to imagine that glyphosate would be a major contaminant in gelatin, a very common food additive and the main constituent of gelatin-based deserts. Gelatin is routinely added to marshmallows, pudding, gummy bears, yogurts, margarine, frosting, cream cheese, sour cream, non-dairy creamers and fat-reduced foods.

    There are hundreds if not thousands of proteins that strongly depend on glycine at certain spots in their chain in order to adequately perform their job.

    Gelatin is typically derived from the bones, joints and skin of pigs and cows. These animals are fed high doses of glyphosate in their GMO Roundup Ready corn and soy feed. The glyphosate that makes its way into their joints ends up in your gelatin dessert.

    Gelatin is also the main constituent of gel caps, which have become a standard way of packaging both pharmaceutical drugs and nutritional supplements such as fish oil. I would predict that any nutritional supplement housed in a gel capsule is going to cause you much more harm than good, because whatever benefit the contents provides is more than offset by the damaging effects of the glyphosate.

    Although celery is rich in many beneficial compounds, its premier cancer-fighting constituent is an antioxidant flavonoid called apigenin – which has been impressing researchers with its powerful chemopreventive effects. Again and again, in both cell and animal studies, apigenin was found to inhibit the initiation, progression and metastasis of tumors.

    And, apigenin fights cancer at every stage – with multiple mechanisms of action. This versatility is important because it may help to overcome the natural genetic variations that make some patients unable to benefit from a single chemopreventive compound.

    Apigenin prevents, suppresses and even reverses cancer in several distinct ways

    Angiogenesis – the growth of new blood vessels to nourish tumors – is an important process in the proliferation of cancer. Apigenin has been found to inhibit angiogenesis, thus depriving tumors of blood, oxygen and nutrients they need to survive.

    In a cell study, apigenin helped to “starve” human pancreatic cancer cells by depriving them of glucose, which is needed to fuel cancer’s rampant growth.

    Apigenin also interferes with molecular signaling, decreasing the production of chemicals needed by cancer cells. In a 2008 study published in Carcinogenesis, apigenin inhibited the expression of focal adhesion kinase – or FAK – a protein essential to cancer’s ability to break down and invade healthy tissue – thereby inhibiting the metastasis of human ovarian cancer cells.

    In another study, researchers found that apigenin protected pancreatic cells from inflammatory and cancer-causing damage induced by the NF-kappaB cytokine.  And, finally, apigenin promotes apoptosis – the programmed death of cancer cells. Researchers have found that the ability of apigenin to induce apoptosis reduced the incidence of early lesions in rats with laboratory-induced colon cancer.

    New review of research confirms anti-cancer effects

    In an extensive and recent review of cell and animal studies on apigenin published in 2016 in Journal of Cancer Protection, the authors credited the flavonoid (in celery) with diverse and powerful chemoprotective qualities and effects.

    These include suppressing the progression of prostate cancer, causing a marked reduction in carcinomas, slowing cancer cell proliferation, reducing levels of pro-inflammatory molecules that can trigger cancer, promoting apoptosis and decreasing blood vessel growth to tumors.

    Concluding that apigenin is beneficial in both the prevention and treatment of many types of cancer, the review authors called for more clinical studies.  Of course, research on apigenin’s stunning anti-cancer effects is ongoing.

    So, don’t be fooled: Despite its reputation as a nutritional “lightweight,” celery can be a powerful weapon in your arsenal of natural cancer-fighting foods.
