    Going Vegan To Save the Planet? Consider Going Organic.

    Organic farming isn’t just about producing more nutritious food from healthy soils, or about omitting the use of pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics or growth hormones. At its core, it is a system of agriculture that addresses a range of environmental and economic issues that go beyond the personal health. Organic farming looks to the future and considers what will be left for children and grandchildren. According to Dr Natasha McBride Veganism/vegetarianism simply for the sake of ‘saving the planet’ or ‘saving the animals’ actually plays into the hands of those who practice unsustainable farming that poisons our lands, water, and food.

    If you take two people and ask them both to grow carrots for example but one person you ask to grow carrots for the best quality, another for the highest profit they will go about doing this task of growing carrots in two very different ways.

    Industrial agriculture is all about producing food in large amounts but the quality of it is questionable. Its all about producing yield, the largest amounts of food at the smallest cost. As the result, you get a certain quality.

    Traditional agriculture, people are focused on the health and happiness of the animals and the birds they look after. And the quality and the happiness of the soil that they work with. Traditional practices that they use the quality of food that they produce is very very different.

    Problem is, many people don’t think about the future. They think I’m alright now, this will last for a few years. What about our children and our grandchild? What are we leaving for them?

    They will have to deal with the results of our activity what we are doing today.

    People need to start waking up – and what we are doing to our land. We have to produce food because we have to eat. There is way of producing plenty of food without destroying nature, Without destroying soil, without being cruel to animals, to birds and to the other creatures on this planet, without poisons our waterways, without causing global warming. The most important cause of global warming and climate change is arable industrial agriculture. The biggest reservoir of stable carbon in the environment is topsoil.

    Carbon Dioxide Topsoil and Global Warming?

    Carbon dioxide is the principal, heat-trapping gas causing the greenhouse effect and our global warming. Consequently, the world-wide carbon cycle is of vital and basic importance. “World soils, an important and active pool of organic carbon, play a major role in the global carbon cycle.” In fact, the carbon content of soil is “about twice that of the atmospheric pool and about three times that of the biotic pool.” Thus, the increasing atmospheric carbon, the greenhouse effect, and all our global warming problems have been and are much affected by even small changes in world-wide soil carbon content.

    Professor R. Lal, School of Natural Resources, The Ohio State University points out that conventional agriculture degrades the soil by leaving it bare, breaking up its tiny humus-containing aggregates, and failing to return plant residues. Of course, both the humus and the plant residues are wonderful sources of organic carbon. Consequently, the rise of conventional agriculture has contributed to the atmospheric increase in carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrogen oxide compounds – the greenhouse gases.

    Conservation tillage uses the crop residues and keeps the soil covered most, if not all of the time – all the way from planting through and beyond harvest. This practice by intelligent and forward-looking farmers is increasing. Often it involves using cover crops and crop rotations. Along with keeping the crop residues, these farmers retain and sometimes increase the biomass of their soil, which is essential for its health, productivity, and for retaining its organic carbon content. Thus, devastating soil erosion – common in conventional agriculture – from water and/or from wind is avoided.

    Restoration of degraded soils is an important option for carbon sequestration and mitigating the greenhouse effect. It is a win-win situation. While improving productivity through enhancing soil quality, restoration of degraded soils can also sequester carbon and minimize risks of the greenhouse effect. The data . . . show that goals of increasing soil organic carbon content . . . by residue management, conservation tillage, and restoration of degraded soils can effectively mitigate the current rate of increase of atmospheric CO2 [carbon dioxide] concentration.

    In other words, balance and thus take care of all other human greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

    Going Vegan to Save the Planet – Then Consider Going Organic

    Growing food organically is HARD WORK! It is labor intensive and the yield is unpredictable. On the other hand, growing food conventionally has all been worked out. Spray these chemicals on day one, day six, here’s a machine for this and here’s a machine for that. Its all been worked out to produce looks of good looking produce on the outside. It’s all chemicals, chemicals, chemicals, machines, machines, machines, it’s profitable. The quantity is great the quality, is not.

    On the other hand, raising meat, milk, eggs organically is EASY compared to conventional farming. Pasture-raised the animals are in their natural environment, feeding themselves, absorbing nutrients from the wild forage and the sunlight. Raising farm animals conventionally is HARD WORK. It’s unnatural. Animals are contained in building, not allowed in nature. It’s costly, the feed, the drugs to keep the animals well. Their lives are miserable and what they produce is poor quality. They are sick animals and produce sick milk, and sick eggs and sick meat.

    So reducing the number of people who consume the more difficult more costly conventional meat is to the benefit of the industrial agricultural complex.

    As far as the industrial agriculture is concerned, they would LOVE everyone on this planet to become a vegetarian/vegan to stop eating meat, milk and eggs and to just eat their ‘chemically laden’ plants. Because if that happens, the majority of the people on the planet their profits will go through the roof and they will grow and grow and grow. It is in their best commercial interest. When you become a vegan activist you are feeding into the coffers of the industrial agri-chemical complex. You are doing EXACTLY what they want you to do.

    It is not possible to feed one vegetarian for one year out of an organic garden. I am telling you that as an organic farmer. The vast majority of vegetarians do not have organic gardens. Vegetarians/vegans get their vegetables from the supermarket – brought to you buy the agriculture complex. Sprayed with chemicals and nanoparticles to keep the foods that kill the food to keep them from spoiling or sprouting.

    It’s very important for people who change their diet to plant-based diet in order to save the planet and save the animals to take a hard look at this subject and to do some research. Saving the planet will take more than changing diet – it will require a change in the way we grow our food plant or animal.

    Popular Hummus Brands Contaminated with Herbicide

    Is your healthy hummus is filled with glyphosate a weed killer that’s a probable carcinogen and endocrine disruptor? Moms Across America released test results of 10 hummus samples from 8 brands and all but 1 tested positive for glyphosate weedkiller (Roundup herbicide).

    Lilly’s Hummus representative stated that they source their garbanzo beans from organic farmers in California. When asked about the absence of glyphosate in their products they stated, regarding their suppliers, “They perform random field pre-checks on crops, and recognize glyphosate as one of the worst herbicides. We’re very gratified to produce a nourishing product safe for individuals and families free of this substance.”

    Moms Across America says, “The issue is making sure the organic garbanzo beans are really organic. We encourage brands to do their due diligence. Thank you Lily’s for sourcing non-glyphosate sprayed garbanzo beans.”

    Why is hummus contaminated?

    There are 2 likely sources of glyphosate in the hummus. First, legume and seed crops (non-organic) are routinely sprayed with Roundup as a pre-harvest desiccant (drying agent). Secondly, most hummus seems to have canola oil on the label (rather than olive oil as the only oil) and canola oil is almost always GMO and engineered to be Roundup Ready (live through field spraying with Roundup).

    Hummus the Easy Way

    Ingredients:

    1. 2 cups drained well-cooked or canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
    2. One large eggplant roasted until soft (350˚ for 15- 20 minutes), cooled, peeled and seeded for added nutrition
    3. 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    4. 3-4 cloves garlic, peeled (saute before adding for a sweeter hummus)
    5. Sea Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
    6. Juice from 1 lemon (seeded)
    7. 1/2 tsp. Lemon Powder (optional – frozen, dehydrated, and powdered form available from Fred Meyer’s or online by TrueLemon)

    Directions:

    Mixed together 1 minute or so in a Cuisinart until smooth. Taste, add more salt, lemon juice, OO as desired.
    Serve with pita bread and carrot and celery stalks.

    Kids love this, but I introduced them all to lemons as babies.

    Summary of Glyphosate’s Danger to Human Health

    Independent, peer-reviewed scientific evidence now shows that glyphosate’s harm to human health could begin at the ultra-low levels of 0.1 parts per billion (ppb). As little as 0.05 ppb of glyphosate causes liver and kidney damage in rats, along with changes in the functions of more than 4,000 genes. SOURCE

    If you’d like to learn more about gene alterations, this is a highly recommended book.

    What gets overlooked by researchers is the synergistic effects of glyphosate with other toxins that are being used along side glyphosate. They also spray pesticides on the same things they spray glyphosate on. Its difficult to find studies accessing what the effects of that are but you can see the dramatic rise in cancer that coincides with the increase in glyphosate usage so it is working synergistic-ally with other toxins.

    The EPA’s “allowable” level of glyphosate found in U.S. drinking water is 700 ppb of glyphosate.

    Feeding Lies

    For years Monsanto has been dogged by questions about the safety of glyphosate for humans, animals and the environment, and for years the company has denied or dismissed claims of its products’ links to a range of serious side effects—including birth defects, cancer, autism, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, kidney disease, wildlife and aquatic abnormalities and death, and even the deaths of butterflies and bees.

    But new information has come to light that shows Monsanto not only knew of the biochemical hazards of glyphosate, but did not reveal the results of its own studies that corroborated several scientific challenges to its product. Recently released court documents clearly show Monsanto knew the toxicity of their product and intentionally covered up the dangers to humans and the environment.

    Humans Contaminated

    Glyphosate is found in vaccines, breastmilk, urine, water. Its detected at high levels in Cheerios, the “irresistible taste of golden honey that also provides 12 essential vitamins and minerals” for American children, contains 1,125.3 ppb.

    Future historians may well look back upon our time and write, not about how many pounds of pesticide we did or did not apply, but about how willing we are to sacrifice our children and jeopardize future generations with this massive experiment we call genetic engineering that is based on flawed science and failed promises just to benefit the bottom line of a commercial enterprise. – Don M.     “Hotspot Vaccine Exemptions” is Fear-Mongering Over 271 Children

    Vaccine exemptions for school is in the news again. This time KPVI from Pocatello and KTVB citing a propaganda “study” that shows that 8 counties in Idaho has HOT SPOTS for “disease outbreaks”. The news article states “A recent study published in the Public Library of Science says Idaho has eight out of the 10 counties with the highest exemption rates in the country. It continues by showing the severity of the exemption rates using statistics such as “22% of Bonner county children” have non-medical vaccine exemptions.

    PAUSE THE PANIC FOR A MOMENT! The real numbers show that is 54 children of the county population of 54,500, didn’t receive both the CDC recommended shots of the MMR vaccine prior to kindergarten.

    The media is intentionally manipulating with fear-mongering over 271 kindergartners in schools that serve 32,000 students, in counties with a total population of more than 250,000 people. Boise Doctors express ‘fear’ over exemptions representing 0.2% of the states 1.7 million people.

    A Listen to what this Meridian Doctor and Board Member of the Idaho Immunization Coalition Lisa Barker had to say,

    “I think we are going to have to see some sort of more significant outbreak to improve those laws,” says Dr. Lisa Barker of Boise. KPVI says, She thinks this sort of outbreak could happen at any time.”That’s the scary thing. I’m just waiting for it to happen because we have big enough pockets that if the right person walks in, it’ll be a big rapid spread.”

    Wow! “Big enough pockets!” Take a look at the chart below showing the percentages of children with non-medical exemptions compared to the total populations of the county. A doctor should know better than anyone that these healthy children pose no health threat!

    “KTVB says: Idaho had some of the highest rates. In some small, rural counties nearly 20 percent of kindergartners didn’t get their shots.” That really equates to TWO kindergartners in the least populated county in Idaho.

    The Forgetten Factor in Herd Immunity?

    The media is just gobbling up this “study” and spitting it out in hopes to generate fear and persuade the public to reduce health freedoms and parental rights in the area of vaccine choice. This study they cite was authored by a vaccine industry insider (Dr. Peter Hotez) who is a patent holder of vaccines. It fails a really simple test: it never contemplates the vaccination status of any ADULTS in these hot spots, despite the fact that they represent 76% of the population, are known by the CDC and the Idaho Health Department to have low vaccination rates, and the fact that vaccines wane over time, in other words they have no immunity from their childhood vaccines. Why is the media so credulous to these industry-sponsored scare pieces?

    Fear mongering a set up for vaccine mandates?

    First create the problem, then present the solution. That is how marketing works right?

    First, they used the tracking of your child’s vaccine record to ‘create’ a threat. Their solution has already been declared – reduce vaccine exemptions and create vaccine mandates. Those who profit from their liability-free vaccines want mandates just as they have in California. Imagine the $$ signs dancing in front of their eyes – their product forced on every school child without any loss from damages or injury. In 2014 the global vaccine market was worth over 32 billion dollars and was expected to reach over 59 billion by the year 2020.(Those damages are paid from the taxes added to each vaccine.)

    Were you aware that drug companies donated millions to California lawmakers before vaccine debate and the Disneyland Outbreak of 2015?

    Did you know that the vaccination status of California before mandated school vaccines was 97.46%?

    Document Discrepancies: Several documents state heights ranging from 65’-93’. Site placement markers have been moved on the property, however geo coordinates do not match newest location (red arrow).

    We are not overstating the issues below. All information is readily available online and quite telling.

    The World Health Organization (WHO) classified radio frequencies as a class 2B carcinogen, same as DDT and lead in its press release of May 2011.

    Electromagnetic radiation such as Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Radio Frequencies (RF) are generated by: Cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, cordless phones, baby monitors, cell phone antennas, smart meters, smart boards, Bluetooth devices, and any wireless transmission.

    Sugar is Carcinogenic?

    It’s a no-brainer when it comes to avoiding sodas, juices with added sugars, pastries, candies, and processed foods that use processed grains and even add sugar or HFCS to foods that are not even sweet. That’s to keep you addicted even if you can’t taste it. Refined sugar is actually addictive, some claim it’s even as addictive as cocaine. Despite all the carcinogenic chemicals that blanket our biosphere, we do have one area that’s in our control – avoiding refined sugars and carbohydrates.

    That’s right, team of UCSF scientists think that sugar is so toxic and so addictive that it should be regulated with taxes, restricted on to whom and where it can be advertised, and age-restricted sales. Right they are in their view on sugar and how it is highly addictive and toxic. Fructose has even been shown to be addictive as cocaine while fueling cancer and obesity rates.

    But would regulating sugar really be the answer to the problem? While sugar consumption definitely needs to be lessened, creating laws against is not the answer. The government doesn’t need to create laws for every single issue we face. Certainly companies shouldn’t be allowed to blatantly lie and tout foods as being healthy when they contain 25g of sugar per serving, that is another issue that would be labeling as informed consent.

    A Recent Study That Makes Sugar Carcinogenic

    Now it’s even worse. There is a study that seems to be hidden from the public eye and is certainly not welcome within our orthodox oncology system. It would cramp the food and soda business’s profits if refined sugar is seen as carcinogenic.

    The study, “Increased sugar uptake promotes oncogenesis via EPAC/RAP1 and O-GlcNAc pathways” was published in the 2013-2014 Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI). Because it is a free access journal, you can access the full text, not just the abstract, here.

    Its a wonder how this study hasn’t made much of a stir in our sick-care system since it is so accessible. Instead it was dug up by a research scout for Green Med Info. It is of course full of biochemical details, which is what medical people are supposed to be familiar with. So for now, let’s be content with a layman’s summary report of their study, which was an in vitro (cultures, petri dishes, and test tubes) study as opposed to an in vivo (animal or human) study. This way they could really play around with and analyze the results with total control.

    Here’s the bottom line of this study: Increased glucose uptake leads to early phases of cancer cell creation while curbing glucose intake reversed cancerous cells into normal cells. In other words, sugar is carcinogenic as well as fodder for already existing cancer cells.

    It’s important to not confuse the enormous amount of refined sugar, table sugar or HFCS, one takes in with sodas and processed foods with naturally occurring sugars and fructose in plant foods, regardless of how high the glycemic index may be. Fruit juices don’t need added sugars, but many fruit juices have sugar added. That’s the type of beverage or food that needs to be avoided.

    But table sugar is refined, and most off the shelf breads and pastries are composed of refined grains that are refined carbohydrates, which become sugar instantly without any compensating nutrition. They are processed out of whole foods to be independent of other compounds that balance natural whole foods to make them beneficial.

    On average, Americans consume 475 calories worth of added sugars each day. That is about 30 teaspoons, or 5x more than even the American Heart Association recommends. The recommended amount of sugar to consume on a daily basis is only 25g, but look at what we have to currently battle:

    • An average bottle of Coke contains over 60g of sugar.
    • A Red Bull contains up to 27g of sugar.
    • Supposedly healthy Vitamin Water contains up to 13g of sugar.
    • An 8oz Snapple contains up to 23g of sugar.
    • A single Pop Tart contains 17g of sugar.
    • A Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll has up to 55g.
    • Most kids cereals, like Capn Crunch, Frosted Flakes and Trix contain anywhere from 10-12g of sugar per serving.
    • A 16oz Starbucks Mocha Grande Frappuccino contains over 40g of sugar.

    While that is discouraging, all of the listed items are actually only a part of a ‘bad’ diet, and are completely avoidable. The change in a drastic reduction in sugar consumption will not happen over night, but with the proper education and dismissal of false advertising, changes will occur in time.

    An interesting informative excerpt from the Cancer Tutor:
    Dr. Tony [Antonio] Jimenez hypothesizes that sugar from Organic Produce may not contribute to cancer cell growth like its adulterated counterpart [refined sugar/HFCS]. He explains that human mammalian cells absorb levorotatory (left spinning) molecules, while cancer cells can only assimilate dextrorotatory (right spinning) molecules.

    Essentially, fruits in their natural state contain left spinning sugars, whereas GMO-influenced fruits consist only of right spinning sugars. Dr. Jimenez concludes that the glycemic index is not nearly as important as the source and lineage of the fruits and vegetables we eat.     Onions are rich in conventional nutrients as well as unique phytonutrients. An onion contains vitamins A, B6, C, Folate and the minerals Calcium, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium, Sodium, and Zinc. Medicinally, Onion is an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, stimulant, and vulnerary. Onion is excellent for treating coughs, colds, the flu and some say even cancer. Its known to help with sleep and improve health of hair.     Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Benefits of Onions

    Onions are a good source of vitamin C and the mineral manganese, two “conventional” nutrients that play a key role in our body’s antioxidant support. Vitamin C, offers protection of genetic materials like RNA and DNA and many of the cell structures.

    Additionally, vitamin C helps Phase 1 (“mixed function oxidase”) enzymes in our body’s detoxification system function properly because it helps keep metal cofactors for those enzymes in place.

    Manganese, is another critical antioxidant benefits supporting proper functioning of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in a form that requires manganese (abbreviated MnSOD). MnSOD is one of the key enzymes in our mitochondria, cell components that are critical for oxygen-based energy production. Good antioxidant protection in our mitochondria is quite essential since these cell components are so vigorously engaged in oxygen metabolism and can trigger problems unless functioning safely.

    Most recognize the unique antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties come from the phytonutrients provided by onions. Perhaps most famous are the quercetin flavonoids (and quercetin glycosides) that are so plentiful in onions (and especially red onions). Also well studied here are the anthocyanin flavonoids that give red onions their incredible color. Studies also show that yellow and white onions can also be concentrated sources of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. Virtually all of these nutrients have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and to be contained in most varieties of onions, including yellow and white varieties. (With the anthocyanin flavonoids, it is a different story, since these flavonoids are only concentrated in red or purple onion varieties.)

    Great for your Teeth and Gums

    Onion has been shown to help prevent bacterial infection. Along with its sulfur-containing compounds, the flavonoid quercetin contained in onion helps provide these antibacterial benefits. Studies showing antibacterial activity of onion in relationship to the bacteria Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. (These bacteria are commonly involved in the production of tooth cavities). Antibacterial benefits have also been shown in the area of gum (periodontal) disease bacteria, including Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia.

    Cancer

    Allium vegetables have been studied extensively in relation to cancer, especially stomach and colorectal cancers. Their beneficial and preventive effects are likely due in part to their rich organosulfur compounds.

    The exact mechanism by which these compounds inhibit cancer is unknown, but hypotheses include the inhibition of tumor growth and mutagenesis, and prevention of free radical formation. Onions are also a source of the strong antioxidant vitamin C that helps to combat the formation of free radicals known to cause cancer.

    Sleep and mood

    Folate, found in onions, might help reduce depression. Homocysteine prevents blood and other nutrients from reaching the brain, and folate prevents this chemical from building up. Excess homocysteine also interferes with the production of the feel-good hormones serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which regulate not only mood, but also sleep and appetite.

    Skin and hair

    Onions are high in vitamin C, which is needed for the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair.

    Could Length of Cutting/Storage of Onion Could Decrease Health Benefits?

    Interestingly, in one study, fresh, chopped, uncooked onion had antibacterial effects on these potentially unwanted gum bacteria, but non-fresh, uncooked onion (raw onion that was chopped and then left to sit for 2 days at room temperature) did not demonstrate these same antibacterial properties nor did fresh onion that was grated and then steamed for 10 minutes. While it is not possible to draw broad conclusions from a single lab study, these findings suggest that length of storage (for onion that has been chopped but not cooked) and duration of heat exposure (in this case involving exposure to steam for 10 full minutes) can affect some of onion’s health benefits.

    For these reasons, special care may be needed in the storage, handling, and cooking of this allium vegetable.

    Recipes

    Healthy Sauté – similar to Quick Boiling and Quick Steaming, – follows three basic cooking guidelines that are generally associated in food science research with improved nutrient retention. These three guidelines are:
    (1) minimal necessary heat exposure;
    (2) minimal necessary cooking duration;
    (3) minimal necessary food surface contact with cooking liquid.

    Heat 2 TBS vegetable or chicken broth over medium heat in a stainless steel skillet.
    When broth begins to steam, add onions and cover for 3 minutes.
    The onions will release a small amount of liquid.
    Uncover, add another 2 TBS broth, and continue to stir for 4 minutes, leaving the lid off.

    • Sofrito sauce—typically associated with Spanish cuisine but actually used in a variety of cuisines worldwide—has been the topic of a recentstudy that provides some fascinating new information about onions. The four sauce ingredients : extra virgin olive oil, garlic, onions, and tomatoes. In this study, several methods for preparation of the sofrito sauce were investigated, but one of the consistent study findings was the ability of onion to help increase the bioavailability of lycopene (a well-studied, health-promoting carotenoid) from the tomatoes. The authors speculated that the sulfur-compounds in the onions may have been involved in a chemical reaction (electron transfer) that helped increase the availability of the lycopene.

    America spends two and a half times more on healthcare per capita than any other developed nation, quickly approaching $3 trillion EVERY year. With this kind of expenditure, you would expect our citizens to be the healthiest in the world, but this is not the case.

    In fact, the US ranks dead last in quality of care—Americans are sicker and live shorter lives than people in most other industrialized nations. So where’s the money going?

    The Credit Suisse Research Institute’s 2013 study1 “Sugar: Consumption at a Crossroads” found that 30 to 40 percent of US healthcare expenditures are for diseases directly related to the overconsumption of sugar!

    We spend more than a trillion dollars each year fighting the damaging health effects of sugar. This, combined with the massive waste, fraud, and inefficiency of our healthcare system, make it completely unsustainable over time.

    US Government Actually Encourages Sugar Consumption

    Excess sugar causes obesity as well as a plethora of illnesses, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and cancer. If you want to locate the sickest people, follow obesity rates. According to a United Health Foundation study, nine of the 10 least healthy states in the nation also have nine of the 10 worst obesity rates.2

    With one food causing such pervasive health problems and so much national expense, you would think our government regulators would do everything they could to lower sugar consumption. But the opposite is true—they encourage it!

    Maybe the US government read the 2008 study that challenged the common notion that preventing obesity would save governments millions of dollars.3 The study suggested that healthy people are more expensive to care for because they live longer.

    Maybe the government wants us to get obese—because we’ll die younger. As cynical as that sounds, it would explain why they continue to subsidize the corn syrup industry.4

    Cancer Predicted to Become #1 Killer of Americans

    Besides the obvious sugar-obesity link, I’ve also often discussed the intrinsic connection between sugar consumption and cancer. It’s no surprise to me that cancer rates keep rising, considering that most people consume highly processed food as the bulk of their diet.

    A diet devoid of healthy fats and natural vitamins and minerals, while being chockfull of processed sugars and fructose along with synthetic chemicals of all kinds simply cannot produce health, and the proof of this is plain for all to see… A recent report by the American Society of Clinical Oncology predicts that a mere 16 years from now, cancer will be the leading cause of death in the US, surpassing heart disease, which is currently number one. As reported by CNN Health:5

    “The number of new cancer cases is expected to increase nearly 45 percent by 2030, from 1.6 million cases to 2.3 million cases annually. This influx of new patients will place a bigger burden on a field of medicine already stretched by physician shortages and financial difficulties, says the report, which highlights growing problems for cancer care in the United States.”

    Without Sugar, Cancer Cannot Thrive

    The most powerful essential strategy I know of to treat cancer is to starve the cells by depriving them of their food source, which, in large part, is typically sugar. Unlike all the other cells in your body, which can burn carbs or fat for fuel, cancer cells have lost that metabolic flexibility and can only thrive if there enough sugar present. Dr. Otto Warburg was actually given a Nobel Prize over 75 years ago for figuring this out but virtually no oncologist actually uses this information.

    Make no mistake about it, the FIRST thing you want to do if you want to avoid or treat cancer if you have insulin or leptin resistance (which 85 percent of people do) is to cut out all forms of sugar/fructose and grain carbs from your diet, in order to starve the cancerous cells.

    I recommend reducing your total fructose intake to a maximum of 25 grams/day, from all sources, including fruit. If you are insulin resistant, you’d do well to make your upper limit 15 grams/day. Cancer patients would likely be best served by even stricter limits. For a more detailed discussion please review my interview with Dr. Seyfreid.

    The easiest way to dramatically cut down on your sugar and fructose consumption is to switch to a diet of whole, unprocessed foods, as most of the added sugar you end up with comes from processed fare, not from adding a teaspoon of sugar to your tea or coffee. But there are other ways to cut down well. This includes:

    • Cutting back on the amount of sugar you personally add to your food and drink
    • Using Stevia or Lo Han instead of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. You can learn more about the best and worst of sugar substitutes in my previous article, “Sugar Substitutes—What’s Safe and What’s Not
    • Using fresh fruit in lieu of canned fruit or sugar for meals or recipes calling for a bit of sweetness
    • Using spices instead of sugar to add flavor to your meal

    Also consider reducing your protein intake to one gram per kilogram of lean body weight. It would be unusual for most adults to need more than 100 grams of protein and most likely close to half of that amount. Replace the non-vegetable carbs (sugar/fructose/grains) and excess protein with high quality fats, such as organic eggs from pastured hens, high quality meats, avocados, and coconut oil. It’s certainly much easier to prevent cancer than to treat it, once it takes hold, and I believe you can virtually eliminate your risk of cancer (and radically improve your chances of recovering from cancer if you currently have it) by following certain basic lifestyle guidelines.     Two Sodas Per Day May DOUBLE Your Chances for an Untimely Death

    A new study found a significant relationship between added sugar consumption and death from heart disease. Americans who consumed the most sugar — about a quarter of their daily calories — were twice as likely to die from heart disease as those who limited their sugar intake to seven percent of their total calories. The average American is consuming 22 teaspoons of sugar per day, about three times what’s recommended. That’s the equivalent of about two sodas.13

    According to Dr. Robert Lustig, one of the leading experts on childhood obesity, excess sugar acts as a poison, responsible for weight gain and a multitude of chronic and deadly diseases. Recent research shows that fructose can activate taste cells found on your pancreas, a reaction that can increase your body’s secretion of insulin and raise your risk for type 2 diabetes. Sugar also reacts with AGEs (advanced glycation end products), which is one of the major mechanisms by which damage accrues in your body and leads to aging and disease.

    To protect your health, consider restricting your fructose consumption to 25 grams per day or less. If you’re overweight or have a disease such as cancer, diabetes, or heart disease (or are at high risk for them) then you’re probably better off further reducing your fructose intake to 15 grams per day or less (and this includes all sources—HFCS, sugar, honey, agave, fruit, fruit juice, maple syrup, etc.).

    Redesigning Subsidies for the Health of People and Planet

    The time is ripe for change. Redesigning our food system could help move us toward health and economic recovery. If we’re going to subsidize farmers, let’s subsidize them in a way that helps restore the health of American citizens and our land—programs that might just pay for themselves by the reduction in healthcare costs they bring about. Two years ago, Mark Brittman of the New York Times14 argued that subsidy money could be easily redirected toward helping smaller farmers to compete in the marketplace in a number of ways. For example, funds could be redirected toward:

    • Funding research and innovation in sustainable agriculture
    • Providing incentives to attract new farmers
    • Saving farmland from development
    • Assisting farmers who grow currently unsubsidized fruits and vegetables, while providing incentives for monoculture commodity farmers (corn, soy, wheat, and rice) to convert some of their operations to more desirable foods
    • Leveling the playing field so that medium-sized farms can more favorably compete with agribusiness as suppliers for local supermarkets

    If you don’t like the idea of your tax dollars funding corporate welfare programs for corporations that flood the market with sugary beverages and processed foods, join forces with organizations that are actively working for positive change. Here are five actions you can take:

    • The Environmental Working Group has started a petition urging Congress to enact a Farm Bill that protects family farmers who help us protect the environment and public health. Take a moment to sign it now.
    • Sign up with the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition to keep abreast of news and action alerts relating to the Farm Bill.
    • Join Food Democracy Now, an organization co-founded by Aaron Woolf, director of the documentary film King Corn.
    • Of course, you can also voice your opinion every day by voting with your wallet and supporting small family farms in your area.
    • Say no to junk food producers by not buying their products, andreturn to a diet of real, whole foods—fresh organic produce, meats from animals raised sustainably and humanely on pasture, and raw organic milk and eggs.
