    Tyson Foods acquires organic-chicken producer

Tyson aquires Smart Chicken’s organic brand. Is that good or bad? Tyson, one of the largest U.S. poultry producers wants to build up a presence in the fast-growing organic segment. Sales of frozen or refrigerated organic chicken have climbed by about two-thirds over the past four years, according to research firm SPINS. Organic chicken sales increased nearly 12% to $333 million over the 52 weeks ended April 28, while conventional chicken sales grew 3% to $7.7 billion over that period, according to data compiled by Nielsen Perishables.

Organic meat tends to be more expensive than conventionally produced kinds. To qualify for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s organic seal, chickens must be fed organic grain, which is raised without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Antibiotics, which are widely used in conventional meat production to treat sick birds and prevent disease outbreaks, are prohibited. Organic chicken farms are required to let the birds go outdoors.

A pack of regular boneless, skinless chicken breasts is priced around $2.49 a pound in U.S. grocery stores this week, according to the USDA, while the organic product sells for about $6.91 a pound.

“What we saw here was an opportunity to bring in another brand into our house of brands, and put us in a position to capture a marketplace that is growing,” said Doug Ramsey, Tyson’s president of poultry.

Colorado-based Pilgrim’s Pride Corp., the second-largest U.S. chicken processor after Tyson, in 2016 converted one of its plants to produce organic chicken. Last year, Pilgrim’s spent $350 million to buy GNP Co., a Minnesota company marketing organic chicken under the Just Bare brand, which Pilgrim’s has been working to expand into more retail locations.

Perdue Farms Inc., another major U.S. chicken firm, based in Maryland, entered the organic market with a deal in 2011 for Coleman Natural.

Organic chicken, though, remains a small fraction of Pilgrim’s and Perdue’s overall poultry production.

Tyson plans to run Tecumseh Poultry as a wholly owned, independent subsidiary, though the company will have access to Tyson’s supply chain to help it grow, Mr. Ramsey said.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that Tecumseh Poultry was exploring a sale. The company was projected to earn about $40 million before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization this year on about $170 million in revenue, people familiar with the matter said at the time.

Smart Chicken touts its air-chilling process, which uses cold air to cool chicken while it is being processed, versus the water-chilling method used by the bulk of the U.S. poultry industry.

Tyson already sells some organic prepared foods, including chicken nuggets and strips under its Nature Raised Farms brand, and Aidells organic sausages.

What are your thoughts? Does this shift mean that more people are concerned about chemical laden food? Or will this be another ‘falsely labeled’ organic brand?

  • Benefits of Tart Cherries

Tart Cherry Juice health benefits, prevention of cancer, prevention of heart disease, improving circulation, speeding up healing process, preventing arthritis, improving focus and attention, help regulating sleep, preventing diabetes, boosting immune system, preventing respiratory problem and promoting weight loss.

Tart cherry juice is rich in various nutrients. An 8-ounce (240-ml) serving contains 119 calories and the following (1):

    • Carbs: 28 grams
    • Fiber: 5 grams
    • Protein: 2 grams
    • Fat: 1 gram
    • Vitamin A: 62% of the RDI
    • Vitamin C: 40% of the RDI
    • Manganese: 14% of the RDI
    • Potassium: 12% of the RDI
    • Copper: 12% of the RDI
    • Vitamin K: 7% of the RDI

Tart cherry juice also contains smaller amounts of B vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium, omega-3 and omega-6 fats, in addition to antioxidants and other beneficial plant compounds (1, 2).

Compared to sweet cherry varieties, tart cherries contain 20 times more vitamin A, and their antioxidant levels are up to five times higher (1, 3, 4, 5).

One easy way to tell tart cherries from sweet varieties is by their color. Sweet cherries tend to be darker in color, whereas tart cherries retain their bright red color after being harvested.

Keep in mind that some varieties of tart cherry juice contain substantial amounts of added sugars, so opt for an unsweetened variety.

A GLASS FOR A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP

Research shows that supplementing with tart cherry juice increases levels of melatonin and helps improve sleep quality and duration (15).

In one study, participants suffering from insomnia drank either 16 ounces (480 ml) of tart cherry juice or the same amount of a placebo juice each day for two weeks. The cherry juice increased sleep time by an average of 85 minutes (16).

Interestingly, tart cherry juice seems to be just as, if not more, effective at reducing insomnia than valerian and melatonin — the two most studied natural products for insomnia (17).

  • Diatomaceous Earth: Non-Toxic Pest Control

    Diatomaceous Earth: Non-Toxic Pest Control

Diatomaceous earth primary uses include filters for pools, cosmetics, insulation, anti-caking, filler, absorbents, and of course, pest control. Diatomaceous earth is entirely made of silica, which originated from the fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic plants called diatoms. Over thousands of years, these diatoms have accumulated in the sediment of rivers, lakes, and oceans turning into the natural substance silica. The silica from the rivers, lakes, and oceans is mined and processed for various uses around the world. It is non-toxic to humans. However, it should NOT be inhaled. The powdery dust is a lung irritant and could result in serious health issues.

DE for Pest Control Purposes (NOT FOOD GRADE or FILTER GRADE)

The DE that you’d use for pest control purposes is not food grade DE. Diatomaceous earth labeled for pest control is NOT as safe as food grade. Pest Control DE usually has specific additives to attract pests into the dust, which make them more dangerous to human health. DE labeled to kill pests has been evaluated by the EPA and is given an EPA registration number. This is important because the EPA evaluates pesticides for human health and environmental risks.

Pest Control DE is a low-toxic form of killing bugs often used as a food additive in grain production and is classified as a desiccant, which means it absorbs moisture from insects’ bodies causing them dry them out and eventually die.

    Safety of DE

    Touching diatomaceous earth

There have been no known issues documented anywhere reporting any dangers with touching DE. Aside from little dry skin, you should be fine to touch it.

    Breathing Diatomaceous Earth

Of all the things that you could do with DE, breathing it, is something you should NOT do.

Inhaling DE (Food Grade or not) is dangerous. This is the #1 worst thing you could do when buying this product from anywhere. The CDC, OSHA, EPA, and other bodies of knowledge continuously agree that breathing in Crystalline or Amorphous silica (the stuff that DE is made of) is bad for human health.

Therefore, if you’re buying it to kill pests or for health reasons make sure you handle it with extreme care. In fact, for pest control purposes, we recommend utilizing a respirator for breathing and a duster to apply a light film in low traffic areas where you think bugs are hanging out.

Learn more about the safety of diatomaceous earth as pest control.

    Natural Indoor Insect Pest Control

    Ants

For long-term, nontoxic control of ants, sprinkle diatomaceous earth where ants congregate.

    Bed Bugs

For bed bugs, it can take up to 10 days for DE to take effect and sometimes even longer.

It can be an effective pest control solution, but it must be looked at as a long-term “slow” approach that should be combined with other forms of pest control. In fact, this recent study in 2013 found that DE ISN’T very effective for bed bug control when used as a standalone solution.

    Cockroaches

Diatomaceous earth is a safe alternative that can be sprinkled in areas where roaches congregate, especially in hidden areas such cabinet tops and behind appliances. Harmless to people, the tiny particles cut the waxy exoskeleton and kills the insect within 48 hours. For a week or so after the treatment, the dehydrating insects will search more actively for water. Therefore, do not be surprised if you see roaches more often after the treatment. Most roaches should be killed within two weeks of application.

    Dust Mites

Dust your mattress, rugs, bedding, and surrounding area with diatomaceous earth. Leave for 2-3 hours or overnight if possible before vacuuming up. Food-grade diatomaceous earth will reduce dust mite populations (along with bedbugs and fleas) and isn’t harmful to humans.

    Fleas

For long-term nontoxic control of fleas, sprinkle diatomaceous earth where fleas may occur. You can also rub diatomaceous earth into the fur of your cat or dog.

    Earwigs

Diatomaceous earth is a safe and effective way to control earwigs in the home. One application in key spots (bathroom, baseboards, window frames) can be a long-term repellent.

Round Up is Wrecking Ball on the Human Body

Dr. Stephanie Seneff, an MIT senior research scientist, and environmental toxins expert are known for having documented the link between glyphosate and autism. She also believes that glyphosate is responsible for many other chronic diseases whose rates have soared in recent years, since the introduction of glyphosate. Dr. Seneff labels glyphosate as “the most significant chemical used today,” and one that has the effect of a “wrecking ball” on the human body. 1

Exposure to glyphosate has been shown to have the following effects on human physiology: 2 3

    • acts as an antibiotic (glyphosate was patented as an antibiotic)
    • chelates important minerals (iron, cobalt, manganese; glyphosate patented as a mineral chelator)https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0300483X09003047
    • decimates the microflora and its ability to produce essential amino acids like tryptophan that converts to serotonin
    • disrupts the microbiome in the intestine, by disrupting the shikimate pathway, causing a decrease in the ratio of beneficial to harmful bacteria
    • inhibition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes
    • disrupts sulfate synthesis and sulfate transport
    • impairs methylation pathways
    • interferes with synthesis of aromatic amino acids and methionine, which leads to shortages in neurotransmitters and folate
    • inhibition of pituitary release of thyroid stimulating hormone
    • toxic and endocrine disruptors in human cell lines 4

Glyphosate exposure has also been associated with the development of various cancers. The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer published a summary in March 2015 that classified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen in humans. 5 The possible cancers linked to glyphosate exposure include:

    • non-Hodgkin lymphoma
    • pancreatic islet-cell adenoma
    • renal tubule carcinoma
    • skin tumors

  • Potential Health Dangers Of The 5G Cell Phone Network

Potential Health Dangers Of The 5G Cell Phone Network

Right now, U.S. wireless companies are installing hundreds of thousands of new antennas, and each one of these new antennas is a microwave transmitter. If you live or work near one of these antennas, that means that you are literally being bombarded by microwave radiation on a constant basis, and once this entire network goes up nationwide it will be extremely difficult for anyone to get away from this radiation completely. Some experts are warning us to consider the health implications before it is too late to do anything about it.

According to CBS News, this new network is supposed to be “up to 100 times faster”, but it will also require that antennas be installed “closer to users than before”…

The wireless industry is in a race to roll out 5G service. The network is supposed to be up to 100 times faster than current data speeds, but it requires cellphone tower equipment to be closer to users than before. Wireless companies in the U.S. say they’ll have to install about 300,000 new antennas – roughly equal to the total number of cell towers built over the past three decades. That’s causing outrage and alarm in some neighborhoods, as antennas go up around homes.

They also are hearing from residents worried about possible long-term health risks. Until now, much of the cell equipment that emits radio-frequency energy has been housed on large towers typically kept hundreds of feet from homes. The new “small cell” technology uses far more antennas and transmitters that are smaller and lower-powered, but clustered closer together and lower to the ground.

Unfortunately, very few people are talking about the potential danger that this nationwide network could pose, and those that do are often marginalized.

That is why it was very surprising to find the following in a recent mainstream news article

“The cell towers are called small cell towers, but they are not so small when they are in your front yard,” said Donna Barron. She is protesting plans to convert light poles in her Montgomery County, Maryland, neighborhood into small cell sites.

“This will cause cancer,” Barron said. She was one of several people who raised health concerns about the radiation emitted by the equipment at a government hearing last month.

So is there scientific evidence that actually shows a link between cell phones and major diseases such as cancer?

Well, a group of over 230 scientists has signed a document that is entitled “the International EMF Scientist Appeal”…

More than 230 scientists from 41 nations — who have published over 2,000 peer-reviewed papers on electromagnetic fields and biology and health — have signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal.

They cite “serious concerns” about “increasing exposure to EMF” based on “numerous recent scientific publications” linking low levels of wireless radiation to health effects.

In that document, we are told that scientific research has shown that exposure to EMF can cause a whole host of health problems…

Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Damage goes well beyond the human race, as there is growing evidence of harmful effects to both plant and animal life.

These findings justify our appeal to the United Nations (UN) and, all member States in the world, to encourage the World Health Organization (WHO) to exert strong leadership in fostering the development of more protective EMF guidelines, encouraging precautionary measures, and educating the public about health risks, particularly risk to children and fetal development. By not taking action, the WHO is failing to fulfill its role as the preeminent international public health agency.

Of course the cell phone industry disputes these claims and will fight against them to their dying breath.

And according to federal law, local communities cannot even consider health concerns when deciding whether or not to put in cell phone antennas…

However, according to federal law the city simply can’t consider health concerns. It’s outlined in a small section of the Telecommunications Act, based on science from 1996, back when we were still talking on cellphones that looked like bricks.

“I find it really unfair,” said Hiestand.

If cities do consider health, cell companies can sue them.

    Wow.

This is another example that shows that it really does matter who we send to Congress.

Some have compared the coming 5G network to being locked in a low level microwave oven 24 hours a day.

If you don’t like the idea of that, unfortunately you don’t have a choice. The 5G network is being rolled out nationwide right now, and the big phone companies have vastly more money and power than you and I do.

  • A New Favorite Herb: Lemon Balm

A New Favorite Herb: Lemon Balm

If you haven’t yet discovered lemon balm, let me introduce you to your new favorite herb. There are so many wonderful uses for lemon balm! Lemon balm is a powerful herb that can combat viruses in the body and powerfully reduce anxiety. Use lemon balm in the garden, for cleaning, and as a tasty addition to numerous recipes.

    Lemon Balm Benefits

Heart palpitations, nervous tension, insomnia, and hyperactivity are all classic indications for lemon balm and these combined describe what some people experience when their thyroid becomes overactive, such as in Grave’s disease. In fact, lemon balm, bugleweed (Lycopus spp.) and motherwort (Leonorus cardiacus) is a classic western formula for a hyperactive thyroid.

Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and, like other mints, it has complicated energetics. Thermally it has been classified as both warming and cooling. This is explained partly by understanding different perspectives within the major living herbal traditions today.

Lemon balm has a sour taste. In Ayurveda sour is classified as hot and wet while in Traditional Chinese Medicine sour is thought to be cooling and moistening. In western herbalism sour is generally thought to be cooling.

    Matthew Wood explains:

“Lemon balm has a sour taste, as its name indicates – it is one of the few sour mints. Like most sour plants, it is cooling and sedative. It combines this property with the typical nerve-calming powers of the mint family to make a strong, but safe and simple sedative. These powers are much more marked when the plant is tinctured fresh. A tincture of fresh melissa should be on the shelf in every household as a general sedative.”

Lemon Balm been used as a mild emmenagogue to promote late menstruation as well as relieve menstrual cramping.

How to Identify The Lemon Balm Plant

As mentioned, lemon balm is in the mint family and has many attributes or identifying features common to this family.
It has square stems and leaves are in an opposite branching pattern.
Lemon balm flowers are white and have the classic “lipped” look of the mint family. It typically flowers from June to September.
This is a perennial plant that is easy to grow. Watch out! It will spread readily in your garden.
If you crush a leaf in your fingers you’ll be introduced to the wonderful lemon scent of lemon balm. In the past it was considered a “strewing herb,” which is an herb hung in the rafters or strewed on the ground to emanate a pleasant scent.

Cured from Cancer with food and meditation. 12 years later still cancer free.

In 2005, Kathy Bero was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer and given about 21 months to live. At the time she was 41 years old, had two young daughters and wasn’t ready to die so she went the traditional route with surgery, chemo, and radiation. But the disease came back.

She said, “Eleven months after my first diagnosis, I was diagnosed with a high-grade tumor in my head and neck. My kidneys were failing; my liver was failing. My lungs were damaged. My heart was damaged. I told my oncologist that I’m done with that protocol because one way or another, I’m going to die. And I don’t want to go that way.”It’s about eating specific foods that fight disease,” she said. HINT: Yes, it can.)

What anti-angiogenic foods do is block the creation of blood vessels, effectually stopping the spread of cancer…it’s like cutting off cancer’s growth supply line. Examples of anti-angiogenic foods are organic vegetables like purple potatoes, carrots, leeks, berries, walnuts, green tea, herbs, and especially garlic. For Bero, garlic is a favorite, “When a recipe calls for two cloves, I’m probably going to put in six because garlic is a really strong cancer fighter.” READ MORE
