  • ‘Dirt Is Good’: Why Kids Need Exposure To Germs

I was told that Grandma use to say “little dirt never hurt anybody.” It seems the more we try to sterilize our world infection, virus and bacteria the worse off our kids get. While we claim that health care is better and more advanced our children are sicker and suffering debilitating illnesses at an alarming rate. Has our fear of illness and bacteria actually weaken our kids immune systems?
‘Dirt Is Good’: Why Kids Need Exposure To Germs

As a new parent, Jack Gilbert got a lot of different advice on how to properly look after his child: when to give him antibiotics or how often he should sterilize his pacifier, for example.

After the birth of his second child, Gilbert, a scientist who studies microbial ecosystems at the University of Chicago, decided to find out what’s actually known about the risks involved when modern-day children come in contact with germs.

“It turned out that most of the exposures were actually beneficial,” Gilbert says. “So that dirty pacifier that fell on the floor — if you just stick it in your mouth and lick it, and then pop it back in little Tommy’s mouth, it’s actually going to stimulate their immune system. Their immune system’s going to become stronger because of it.”

Gilbert is now the co-author of a new book called Dirt is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System. Presented in a Q&A format, the book seeks to answer many of the questions Gilbert has fielded from parents over the years.

What are some things that parents get wrong?
Some of the main things are over-sterilizing their environment, keeping their children from ever getting dirty. So going out into the backyard and playing in the mud, and then as soon as they’re filthy, bringing them in and sterilizing their hands with antiseptic wipes, and then making sure that none of the dirt gets near their faces. Also, keeping them away from animals. The dogs and cats, sure, but also, other animals. It’s fine to wash their hands if there’s a cold or a flu virus around, but if they’re interacting with a dog, and the dog licks their face, that’s not a bad thing. In fact that could be extremely beneficial for the child’s health.

What about hand sanitizer? Good or bad?
Usually bad. Hot, soapy water is fine. Even mildly warm, soapy water is fine, and it’s probably less damaging to the child’s overall health.

How about the five-second rule? The idea that if something falls on the ground and is there for under five seconds, it’s clean.
The five-second rule doesn’t exist. It takes milliseconds for microbes to attach themselves to a sticky piece of jammy toast, for example. But it makes no difference. Unless you dropped it in an area where you think they could be a high risk of extremely dangerous pathogens, which in every modern American home is virtually impossible, then there’s no risk to your child.

Wash a pacifier or lick it if it falls on the ground?
Lick it. A study of over 300,000 children showed that parents who licked the pacifier and put it back in — their kids developed less allergies, less asthma, less eczema. Overall, their health was stronger and more robust.

Are things like allergies an unintended consequence of trying to protect our kids too much? From Birth, Our Microbes Become As Personal As A Fingerprint

Absolutely. In the past, we would have eaten a lot more fermented foods, which contain bacteria. We would have allowed our children to be exposed to animals and plants and soil on a much more regular basis. Now we live indoors. We sterilize our surfaces. Their immune systems then become hyper-sensitized. You have these little soldier cells in your body called neutrophils, and when they spend too long going around looking for something to do, they become grumpy and pro-inflammatory. And so when they finally see something that’s foreign, like a piece of pollen, they become explosively inflammatory. They go crazy. That’s what triggers asthma and eczema and often times, food allergies.

Give us some advice. What should I allow my child to do?
Oftentimes, it’s hard to get your kid to eat a healthy diet. I would strongly try to encourage the consumption of more colorful vegetables, more leafy vegetables, a diet more rich in fiber as well as reducing the sugar intake. But just generally, allow your kid to experience the world.

  • Thousands of Adults and Children Lost Their Hair. Will Anything Change?

    Thursday, July 13, 2017

Almost two years ago, EWG first reported that more than 17,000 adults and children had lost some or all of their hair after using a shampoo advertised by celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean and sold by one of the nation’s largest direct marketing firms.

Yet Congress has failed to give the Food and Drug Administration the basic tools it needs to ensure that cosmetics and other personal care products are safe – or to even know when products are hurting consumers.

In the case of WEN, the shampoo linked to the hair loss, the manufacturer had no duty to tell the FDA that thousands of women and girls had lost their hair. In fact, by 2015, the FDA had only received 127 “adverse event” reports lawsuit about WEN – less than one percent of the cases cited by court documents filed in a lawsuit in Los Angeles by some of the women against Guthy-Renker LLC, the maker of the shampoo.

Under current law, the FDA has virtually no power to review cosmetic chemicals to determine safety and has little power to act when companies produce unsafe products. As the case of WEN revealed, the FDA doesn’t even have the power to know when products harm American consumers.

In the last five years, Congress held one hearing on cosmetics. That’s it.

There’s been no progress on Capitol Hill despite efforts by Sens. Feinstein, D-Calif., and Susan Collins, R-Maine. They’ve introduced legislation that would ensure that companies report “serious” adverse events to the FDA within 15 days. Theirbill would also give FDA the power to order recalls and stop the production of dangerous products. Most importantly, their bill would also require FDA to review the most dangerous chemicals in cosmetics. Reps. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., and Leonard Lance, R-N.J., have developed a House version of the Feinstein-Collins bill.

The good news is that Feinstein-Collins bill is broadly supported by the personal care products industry. Cosmetics giants including Estee Lauder, Revlon, L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, as well as smaller companies like Juice Beauty and the Honest Company, support their bill.

Even hand-made soap companies, who opposed an earlier version of the bill, have endorsed the Feinstein-Collins bill after changes were made to address their concerns. The new version of the bill exempts home-based businesses with annual average sales below $1 million, exempts small companies with annual average sales below $500,000, and creates a simplified registration process for small companies with sales between $500,000 and $2 million.

The Feinstein-Collins bill is also “paid for,” as legislators like to say. Cosmetics companies have agreed to provide $20 million a year to finance FDA chemical reviews, with most of the funding provided by the largest players in the $62.5 billion industry. No company with sales below $2 million would help finance the FDA’s work.

Many other countries – including Canada, the U.S.’ largest trading partner – already set limits on which chemicals can be used in personal care products.

So what’s the holdup? It’s hard to imagine. The Feinstein-Collins bill is bipartisan, supported by large and small companies, will not cost the taxpayers a nickel and will help open export markets.

No wonder retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and CVS aren’t waiting for Congress and are instead taking steps to set their own standards for which chemicals can be included in cosmetics. Also impatient with Congress, state legislators (and even some city council members) are introducing bills to finally ban some of the most dangerous chemical in these products. The maker of WEN recently settled a class action suit, but consumers should not be forced to rely on the legal system alone to weed out unsafe products.

We are LIVE with Eliana Lawrence, the fearless 12 year old fighting for better regulations of the cosmetics industry.

No one knows for sure which chemical in WEN may have injured more than 21,000 users (up from 17,000 two years ago). Under current law, the company was not required to provide safety studies to FDA.

But we do know there are chemicals found in cosmetics that are cause for concern, including lead, formaldehyde, parabens, phthalates, and 1,4-dioxane, a chemical linked to cancer but found in hundreds of kids’ products. Most consumers believe FDA already reviews these everyday products for safety. But the truth is that formulators can put just about anything in cosmetics.

It’s time for Congress to act. If thousands of American are losing their hair is not enough to spur action, what is?

Surprising Impact for Gluten Free, Vegan, Vegetarian and Organic Consumers

May 5, 2017 Mission Viejo, CA- Moms Across America releases their report on their recent findings of toxinsin 36 American children, tested at Great Plains Lab, along with results from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA). The results are disturbing and have an important message for Gluten Free, Vegan and Vegetarian American consumers and food manufacturers.

“100% of all the children tested positive for serious toxins. 79% of the children tested had ADHD or autism symptoms, 21% did not. Over 50% tested positive levels of 3X higher than the average. We expected the children who ate organic to have lower levels of toxins than the children who did not. This was not the case for the majority of the children. Upon the release of the CFIA glyphosate data we realized why, and we hope consumer and food manufacturers take note of these important findings.” – Zen Honeycutt of Moms Across America.

Honeycutt focused primarily on glyphosate because scientists report that glyphosate increases the harmful impact of other environmental toxins, making the presence of the other 166 chemicals tested for, even more detrimental.

The CFIA glyphosate testing data, compiled in the book “Poisoned Foods of North America” by Tony Mitra, showed that non-organic gluten free foods and non-organic foods which largely make up vegan and vegetarian foods such as wheat, garbanzo, white and black beans were very high in glyphosate, the world’s most widely used herbicide, up to 12,699 ppb. Health conscious parents who try to feed their children organic are much more likely to feed their children gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian foods whether or not they are also organic, thus unintentionally poisoning their children with higher levels of glyphosate. This shows that health-conscious consumers who are eating gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian foods must be sure those foods are also organic in order to avoid this toxic herbicide.

However, some foods are contaminated whether they are organic or not. Particularly alarming was the finding that even organic garbanzo beans, organic chickpeas, and some organic lentils were highly contaminated with glyphosate. These foods should be avoided completely from North America if one wants to avoid consuming glyphosate herbicides.

Claims that glyphosate-based herbicides are safe are widely believed, as Roundup and other GBH brands have been used for 40 years. In the past ten years, there has been a significant increase of the use of glyphosate directly on nonorganic food as a drying agent in addition to GMO crops. Honeycutt and her organization assert this is unsafe, and a major contributing factor to the skyrocketing childhood illnesses in America today.

“Proponents of GMO and chemical farming claim glyphosate-based herbicides are safe, according to the EPA. But the EPA policy is to require safety studies on one declared active chemical ingredient, not the final formulation of the herbicide. They have admitted to not having any long-term animal studies on the final formulation of Roundup. Therefore, any claims that Roundup and glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are safe are completely unfounded. We call on farmers to stop using harmful chemicals on all of our food and feed crops immediately. We must reduce the toxic burden on our children and protect the future of our country, “ says Honeycutt.

  • Largest medical fraud takedown in American history

Too many trusted medical professionals like doctors, nurses, and pharmacists have chosen to violate their oaths and put greed ahead of their patients. Amazingly, some have made their practices into multimillion dollar criminal enterprises. They seem oblivious to the disastrous consequences of their greed. The Largest medical fraud takedown in American history as more than 400 doctors, nurses and pharmacists are arrested for healthcare and opioid scams worth $1.3B in false billing. We are sending a clear message to criminals across the country: we will find you. We will bring you to justice. And, you will pay a very high price for what you have done.

On Thursday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that federal prosecutors charged more than 400 people (doctors, nurses and pharmacists) for taking part in medical fraud and opioid scams that totaled $1.3 BILLION in fraudulent billing.

In total, 412 individuals will be prosecuted by his office in what’s been called the “largest health care fraud takedown operation in American history.”

In fact, this opioid scam, which has been in effect for at least ten years, didn’t come to light until disadvantaged and middle-class whites began dying in their numbers.”
