  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) A Naturopathic Treatment Approach

It’s that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, the air is getting cooler, and the leaves are starting to paint our city in beautiful yellows, oranges, and reds. Along with this pleasant turn of the season comes a higher prevalence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). For those that experience SAD, the coming of fall and winter presents unique mental health challenges.

SAD is a type of depression that comes and goes with the seasons. It is often experienced as an exacerbation of preexisting mental health conditions that worsens in the coldest and darkest times of the year. It is very common in the United States (up to 10%) during the months of October through February.

Symptoms of seasonal affective disorder include:

    • Feeling down or depressed most of the day, nearly every day
    • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
    • Low energy
    • Low motivation
    • Insomnia or oversleeping
    • Change in appetite, especially increased cravings for carbohydrates
    • Change in weight
    • Feeling sluggish
    • Heightened irritability or agitation
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
    • Having frequent thoughts of death or suicide
    • Fatigue

Just because symptoms arise seasonally doesn’t mean you have to “tough-it-out” and wait for the spring season to bring relief. Treating SAD proactively can help to maintain steady mental state of mind and motivation throughout the year. Below are some ideas for maintaining great mental health in this more challenging time of year.

Boise Natural Health Clinic suggests these supports to build a healthy foundation for any mental health treatment.

    Healthy daily diet

    • Health Freedom Idaho member suggested: “Endorphins are key! Eat feel good foods that boost serotonin and dopamine and get the heart pumping and blood flowing as much as possible”

    Proper supplementation

    • Omega-3 fatty acids, Probiotics, Vitamin D3, and a good multivitamin

    Go Outside

In the winter months we don’t get enough sunshine and, as a result, we also lack Vitamin D which contributes to SAD. Try to go outside in the daylight whenever possible – it doesn’t need to be for a long time, even half an hour can make a difference. You should also avoid wearing sunglasses (but never look directly at the sun) to get the most out of the daylight hours.

    Adequate sleep

Make a plan and routine to get more than 7 hours a sleep a night. Plan a night time routine. Get off screens at least an hour before bed, blue light from screens can interfere with your bodies ability to make Melatonin generated by the body to help you feel you ‘sleepy’. A simple habit such as a cup of tea before bed is calming and can help your body and mind relax to ease sleep. Many suggest magnesium to help promote restful sleep. There are many varieties to choose from a whole food version successfully used with adults and children is here.

    Exercise

    • Exercise increases endorphins (neurotransmitters that make you feel happy) and decreases cortisol (our stress hormone). As I’ve told many of my patients, exercise is the best stress management because it helps to decrease cortisol just like you would draining a battery. It is an incredible stress management tool, that when used effectively, can be a game changer for some.

    Solid Stress Management Routine

Health Freedom Idaho members made the following suggestions:

    • Re-prioritize! Say no more often and only say yes to the most important things. Take more down time with the family.
    • Focus on a few big activities to look forward too. A buck list of ideas that don’t take a lot of planning or finances are often the most memorial and can keep the motivation going through the season.

Manage your holiday expectations. Don’t set yourself up for failure by making blanket statements “This will be the best Christmas ever.” But keep positive in your mindset. Set boundaries and limits so that your family and close friends will know what you will (and won’t) be doing for the holidays. This will give you the freedom to stay ‘no’ without feeling you are failing others, which can lead to a negative mindset.

If you experience SAD, please know you are not alone. Should you need additional support, Naturopathic treatments for SAD may include  light therapy (light box), counseling and targeted supplementation.

    Light Therapy

A light box imitates the natural light of the day, and can be useful when used at your desk in the morning and throughout the day when the days get dark and short. Light boxes can help to decrease the amount of melatonin (the hormone that makes you sleepy) and increases the amount of serotonin (the hormone that makes you happy) when used during the day.

    Psychotherapy

I refer to local area counselors on a frequent basis. Counseling/psychotherapy helps us to address the root cause of depression or other mental health concerns, even if they are only experienced seasonally. The different modalities of counseling have a wide array of benefit. To experience maximum benefit from counseling, it is important to find a therapist that you connect with and to make sure that they provide a type of counseling that fits your needs.

    Emotional Freedom Technique

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can be an incredibly useful and effective modality for managing seasonal affective disorder as well as chronic conditions such as anxiety and depression. Boise Natural Health Clinic’s own Emily Yuen offers EFT and we have seen patients get excellent results.

  • Non-Toxic Flea Prevention

Living the all natural lifestyle takes a special effort especially when it comes to your sweet pet. Protect your pet and family by choosing alternatives to toxic chemicals. These home remedies for fleas will really help.

    An ounce of prevention

Flea prevention is a whole lot easier than trying to get rid of them once they’ve taken over. How do you prevent flea infestations and keep them off your dog?

    DIY Non-Toxic Flea Collar

An essential oil based flea collar is ideal since it provides excellent protection against fleas

     They’re cheap

     Easy to make

    Directions:

     Buy a soft material collar

Soak it in the following mixture:

     1/2 tsp alcohol

     1 drops cedarwood

     1 drop citronella

     1 drop thyme

Mix with 2 garlic capsules (empty them out) OR 2 drops of the following mixture: 1 tsp vegetable oil that’s been diluted with

    1 drop garlic EO

Blend ingredients together and pour it over the collar until fully absorbed.

Leave to dry before putting around your pet’s neck

This treatment should be effective for about one month.

    Everyday Flea Repellent Spray

Here’s my favorite everyday flea spray that’s lightly scented and very effective if you spray your dog each day when she goes outside. Pay special attention to the belly, tail, legs and ears.

    What you need:

    1 organic lemon

    2 sprigs of fresh rosemary

1 sprig of garden sage (Salvia officinalis)

    1 quart of filtered water

    Optional: 1 sprig of lavender

    How to make it:

    • Slice the lemon into thin rounds

    • Place the lemon, rosemary and sage in a large stainless steel or glass bowl

    • Add a quart of almost boiling water

    • Cover and let steep overnight

    • In the morning strain the liquid into a spray bottle

    • Refrigerate (lasts 1 to 2 weeks)

    Prevention for the YARD
    Plants That Guard

Keep pots of lemon balm, sage, rosemary, catnip, lemongrass, basil and mint outside of your main “potty” doors and throughout your yard. These plants help repel fleas through the natural oils that they secrete and deter fleas from entering the house.

A Bit of Dust will do it. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) dust that is.

Diatomaceous earth is a non-toxic powder made up of fossilized organisms called diatoms that break apart flea eggs and dry them out before they can grow into adult fleas.

You can purchase DE online. Make sure you’re buying food grade DE only. Industrial grade DE is chemically treated and used for pools and manufacturing.

CAUTION: DE can irritate your lungs so wear a mask and make sure your dogs and animals aren’t breathing the dust. After the dust has settled, DE is safe.

What is YOUR favorite flea prevention?

  • Elderberry syrup is better than a shot to avoid the flu

Logic and evidence-based proof that elderberry syrup is the better choice to boost immunity against the flu. That’s right! Elderberries have been proven to both boost the immune system and shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms significantly.

    What Are Elderberries?

Black elderberry extract (Sambucus species) has been reported to have been used for years by native Americans, mostly against rheumatism and fever. Sambucol is a natural remedy with antiviral properties, especially against the human influenza virus. Elderberry is used for its antioxidant activity, to lower cholesterol, to improve vision, to boost the immune system, to improve heart health and for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections and tonsillitis. Bioflavonoids and other proteins in the juice destroy the ability of cold and flu viruses to infect a cell.

    Elderberry Evidence

Believe it or not (Believe it, buddy!) elderberries have been studied in REAL labs!   In fact, they have been studied in double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized studies.  (That’s more than we can say for some vaccine studies!).  Elderberries have been proven to both boost the immune system and shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms significantly.

At the Bundesforschungsanstalt Research Center for Food in Karlsruhe, Germany, scientists conducting studies on Elderberry showed that elderberry anthocyanins enhance immune function by boosting the production of cytokines. These unique proteins act as messengers in the immune system to help regulate immune response, thus helping to defend the body against disease.

    Study #1

    A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study.

    Results:

    1. Sambucol was shown to be effective in vitro against 10 strains of influenza virus
    2. Sambucol reduced the duration of flu symptoms to 3-4 days
    3. Convalescent phase serum showed a higher antibody level to influenza virus in the Sambucol group, than in the control group.
    4. Sambucol is beneficial to immune system activation and in the inflammatory process in healthy individuals or in patients with various diseases.
    5. The results of this study show that all Sambucol elderberry formulations have a strong stimulatory effect on inflammatory cytokine production by human normal monocytes.
    6. The study was not funded in any way by the company which produces and markets the product of Sambucol in Israel. The study can be found here

    Study #2

Here is another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted in Norway.  Patients received 15 ml of elderberry or placebo syrup four times a day for 5 days, and recorded their symptoms using a visual analogue scale.

     Results:

    1. Symptoms were relieved on average 4 days earlier and use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving
      elderberry extract compared with placebo.
    2. Elderberry extract seems to offer an efficient, safe and cost-effective treatment
      for influenza.
    3. None of the patients reported any adverse reactions related to the medication. (The same can NOT be said for the flu shot!)
    4. A complete cure was achieved within 2 – 3 days in nearly 90% of the elderberry-treated group compared with at least 6 days in the placebo group.
    5. The results of our study show that elderberry syrup is also effective against influenza A virus infections.
    6. In view of its in vitro and in vivo efficacy on influenza A and B viruses, elderberry extract offers an efficient, safe and cost-effective supplement to the present armamentarium of medications for the prophylaxis and treatment
of influenza. This study can be viewed here

    DIY Elderberry Syrup

Hippocrates Is Said To Have Called This Plant . . .
His “medicine chest,” and for thousands of years it’s been revered in folk medicine for its healing properties. (source) Now studies are starting to confirm what tradition has long held: elderberries are a delicious and effective way to support immune function during cold and flu season.

Unlike fire cider, which supports the immune system through an infusion of pungent and spicy herbs, this elderberry syrup recipe uses a sweet and simple decoction of berries and honey. Learn HOW TO from easy video tutorial from mommypotomus

    Study # 3

Here is a placebo-controlled, double blind study was carried out on a group of individuals living in an agricultural community (Kibbutz) during an outbreak of influenza B in Panama in 1993.

    Results

    1. A significant improvement of the symptoms, including fever, was seen in 93.3% of the cases in the SAM-treated group within 2 days, whereas in the control group 91.7% of the patients showed an improvement within 6 days.
    2. A complete cure was achieved within 2 to 3 days in nearly 90% of the SAM-treated group and within at least 6 days in the placebo group.
    3. Considering the efficacy of the extract in vitro on all strains of influenza virus tested, the clinical results, its low cost, and absence of side-effects, this preparation could offer a possibility for safe treatment for influenza A and B.
    4. Sambucol Elderberry Extract and its formulations activate and boost the healthy immune system by increasing inflammatory cytokine production.
    5. The most striking increase was noted in TNF-alpha production (44.9 fold).
    6. Sambucol was shown to be effective in vitro against 10 strains of influenza virus. This study can be viewed here

Conclusion: The Flu Vaccine Just Doesn’t Measure Up
10% ‘effective’ flu shot in 2018 and the CDC and Health Department campaigns still encourage people to load up on the toxic shot.

    The evidence speaks for itself.

    • The elderberry has no known harmful side effects, but the flu shot does
    • The elderberry syrup works with your natural immune response system, the flu shot does not
    • Elderberries have been proven to be effective against 10 strains of the flu
    • Elderberries have been proven to shorten the duration of colds and flu
    • Elderberry syrup is safe for pregnant women and children over 1 year of age (due to the honey content) (Check with your doc before starting/stopping any health regimen)
    • The flu shot is even less effective in senior citizens and children under 2 years of age (Those who need it the most! Read more here)
    • The flu shot has never been tested in pregnant women
    • There have been reported deaths and serious injuries proceeding the flu shot (Seizures, narcolepsy, convulsions, encephalomyelitis, facial palsy, facial paresis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, hypoesthesia, myelitis, neuritis, neuropathy, paresthesia and syncope just to name a few) Read more here.
    • The flu mist is a live virus and can spread the flu to others up to 21 days following the application (Isn’t that what we’re trying to avoid!?)

  • 6 Natural Remedies for Headache

HFI: The occassional headache. Its unavoidable it seems. Headaches are something that millions of people experience daily. They are at best, an unwelcome annoyance and at their worst, completely debilitating. There are many reasons for the onset of a headache and many classifications of headaches. While many types of headaches are related to other health issues, the number one cause of headaches is stress and fatigue….

Here are some suggested home remedies for headaches that have worked for friends and families of Health Freedom Idaho.  Please note headaches are not something a child should regularly experience. Injury, illness, food intolerances, and emotional upheaval certainly can bring on the random headache but in general, children should not get headaches. If your child is experiencing frequent headaches, you need to seek medical expertise to get to the root. Never mess around with on ongoing headache.

    Favorite Headache Home Remedy:

    Lavender Oil

Not only does lavender smell great — it’s also a useful home remedy for headaches and migraine pain. Lavender oil can be either inhaled or applied topically. Two to four drops for every two to three cups of boiling water are recommended when inhaling lavender-oil vapors as a headache treatment. Unlike many medicinal oils, this home remedy can also be safely applied externally without the need to dilute it. Lavender oil should not be taken orally.

    Peppermint Oil

Peppermint is a soothing home remedy that has been shown to benefit tension headaches. This fresh-smelling oil has vaso-constricting and vaso-dilating properties, which help control blood flow in the body. Headaches and migraine pain are often due to poor blood flow, and peppermint oil helps to open and close the vessels that promote flow. Peppermint home remedies also open up the sinuses so that more oxygen can get into the bloodstream.

    Basil Oil

Basil, the strong-scented herb used as a topping for pizzas and pastas, certainly tastes and smells good. And for people in need of a natural headache treatment, the oil derived from basil plants can also be a useful home remedy. Basil works as a muscle relaxant, so it is especially helpful for headaches caused by tension and tight muscles.

    DIY Scalp Massage

Do-it-yourself scalp massages can be an effective way to alleviate migraine pain, and they feel great. Researchers in Brazil showed that massaging the greater occipital nerve — the area in the back of the head, at the base of the skull — reduces migraine pain. Massage in general has been identified as a useful home remedy for headaches, especially reflexology (massaging reflex points on the hands and feet).

    Feverfew

Feverfew, as its name suggests, is used to treat fever, but it’s most commonly known as an herbal headache treatment. This home remedy became popular in the 1980s, when a landmark study in Great Britain showed that 70 percent of participants had less migraine pain after taking feverfew daily. Since then, more studies have demonstrated feverfew’s benefit in preventing and treating migraine pain. One study showed improvement in migraine pain among people who took daily feverfew in combination with white willow, another herbal home remedy, which contains properties similar to aspirin.

    Flaxseed

Some headaches are caused by inflammation, which can be reduced by consuming omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed can help provide headache relief because it’s rich in omega-3s. Flaxseed can be used as a home remedy in several forms, including as an oil and ground or whole seeds.

    Buckwheat

Buckwheat’s usefulness as a home remedy for headaches and migraine pain comes from a flavonoid known as rutin. Flavonoids are phytochemicals, which are found in plants, and have been shown to contain antioxidant properties, which counteract damage to cells. In addition, researchers in Taiwan have demonstrated the effects of flavonoids on inflammation, a common cause of headaches.

  • Natural Remedy Activated Charcoal

Julie: Our family found the benefits of activated charcoal when one of my children, highly sensative to a variety of foods, would vomit for days upon contamination. We tried every ‘remedy’ and discovered when given charcoal fast enough after exposure, we could elminate days and hours of his agony. We use it at the first sign of indigestion now and haven’t had to deal with that type of reaction in years.

    Other Benefits of Activated Charcoal

    • The secret to an effective “whole body detox” might just be activated carbon (aka activated charcoal).

    • Ancient physicians used regular charcoal for a variety of medical purposes, including treating epilepsy and anthrax. Today, beyond use in hospitals as an antidote for drugs and poisons, activated charcoal is a global remedy for general detoxification and intestinal disorders.

    • The porous surface of activated charcoal has a negative electric charge that attracts positively charged toxins and poisons. It binds them, and escorts them out of your body through the elimination process of your intestines.

    • Activated charcoal is completely odorless, tasteless, and safe to consume and can be purchased in handy capsules or tablets.

    WHAT IS Activated Charcol?

You make activated charcoal by burning a source of carbon (wood or debris or coconut shells). The high temperature removes all the oxygen and activates it with gases like steam. Basically the process that creates activated charcoal (steam heating and oxidation) ends up creating an adsorbent internal lattice of very fine pores that capture, bind, and remove poisons, heavy metals, chemicals, bacteria, toxins, and intestinal gases which have thousands of times more weight than the charcoal itself.

It’s hard to believe, but just two grams of activated charcoal powder has about the same surface area as an entire NFL football field! The porous surface has a negative electric charge that attracts positively charged toxins and poisons; it binds them, and escorts them out of your body through the elimination process of your intestines.

    Detoxification

Detoxifying Your Body With Activated Charcoal

Toxins from low quality, GMO, processed food, and environmental pollution are real problems. It is important to help your body eliminate them to promote a healthy digestive system and brain. Chronic exposure to toxins produces cellular damage, allergic reactions, compromised immunity, and more rapid aging.

Regular use of activated charcoal can remove unwanted toxins from your body, leaving you feeling renewed and more vibrant − often in minutes! Activated charcoal helps unwanted bacteria move through your system faster before they spread and multiply, helping you feel better faster. In addition, activated charcoal flushes out all the toxic heavy metals (such as arsenic, copper, mercury, and lead) that are stored in your body, sometimes for decades.

The best long-term study on the detoxification benefits of activated charcoal was conducted by Professors David O. Cooney (University of Wyoming) and Thomas T. Struhsaker (Duke University). The two professors learned that the monkeys on the African island of Zanzibar eat charcoal from burned tree stumps in order to detoxify.

I understand if the idea of swallowing a spoonful of what is essentially ash may not tickle your fancy.  However, activated charcoal is completely odorless, tasteless, and safe to consume and can be purchased in handy capsules or tablets. And it’s a powerful detoxifying agent to boot!

  • Study: Manuka honey kills more bacteria than all available antibiotics

Study: Manuka honey kills more bacteria than all available antibiotics

Australian researchers have found one type of honey, called Manuka honey, to be better than all known antibiotics.

Manuka honey is produced by bees that forage on the nectar of Leptospermum Scoparium, or New Zealand’s Manuka bush, as well as tea trees, native to Australia and New Zealand only.

This remarkable type of honey not only effectively kills bacteria, but none of the bugs killed by it have been able to build up immunity. In a world where many of the last resort antibiotics are failing against antibiotic-resistant superbugs, Manuka honey may hold the key to fighting resistance issues, saving thousands of lives worldwide.

    Manuka honey fights superbugs

Dr. Dee Carter from the University of Sydney’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences noted that antibiotics not only have short shelf lives, but the bacteria they attack quickly become resistant as well, making them useless over time.

The report, published in the European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, claimed that Manuka honey killed almost every bacteria and pathogen it was tested on. Unlike all antibiotics available on today’s market, none of the bugs tested were able to survive the honey treatment.

According to Dr. Carter, there are particular compounds, like methylglyoxal, in the Manuka honey that cause multi-system failure in the bacteria, killing them before they are able to adapt and build up immunity.

What Manuka honey can do for you

Manuka’s biological properties range from antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antibiotic and wound healing, to immune-stimulatory. However, what separates Manuka honey from the rest is that its antibacterial powers challenge even the toughest superbugs, such as the life-threatening methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
