  • Cancer Parents – Self-Care is a Must

When my son was newly diagnosed it felt as though the ground opened up and swallowed ME. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t stand. Shortly thereafter I couldn’t sleep. Food lost its appeal. It was a moment by moment struggle to fight off the demons of depression, guilt, shame, and rage. All this, and I wasn’t even the one fighting for my life. It was worse – I was fighting for my son’s life.

As the days, weeks, and months wore on, I continued to focus on my son. Utterly and completely on my son. I tried to stay connected to people in the physical realm but it was hard. We were living at the hospital, fighting off unnecessary medications, pouring in necessary nutrients, and providing other supportive modalities (most against the doctor’s better judgement). But he was THRIVING! So, what I was doing was working – how could I stop… even for a minute?

It was second nature to put my self-care on hold. I mean, my world had been turned upside down and I could no longer tell you what made me happy or filled my soul. Everything I was, became about saving my son.
    THIS IS NOT OKAY.

Yes, it is a worthy thing to give your all to keeping your child alive! It is admirable. BUT, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Very quickly the fervor with which you were once able to recognize a detail, address it, handle the situation, and move on is gone. It takes more intention to focus on that detail, even more time for it to register as something to address, etc, etc. How long does it take to get that fervor back? I don’t have an answer for you. Why? Because I’m still trying to get that fervor back for myself. I am slowly regaining my SELF. I can’t help but wonder if I would be struggling with this if I had implemented better self-care policies during my son’s treatment. I will never know.

Disclaimer: I speak from a mom’s perspective here. I in no way mean to diminish what fathers experience… I simply don’t have that viewpoint. So, when I talk about moms doing this or that I do not mean that fathers are absent or uninvolved. My world greatly revolves around cancer mommas and since I am one, that is the place from which I share. Moving on…

So, what self-care did I manage to practice? Well, I drank coffee or tea. Hey, it makes me happy and I will not feel guilty for those thousands of calories I drank over the years as I sought to hold onto ANYTHING that would make any part of me happy. Apparently my mouth was the easiest to satisfy.

I had a friend who was INSTRUMENTAL in helping my body not totally collapse under the crushing weight of stress associated with my child’s cancer journey. She is a massage therapist and her blessing to me was free massages as long as my son was in treatment. Oh, how I wish she had moved states with me. What a Godsend!

Another friend is a hairdresser and offered free hair cuts during treatment. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But it was a HUGE blessing to know that I had that option available to me and I didn’t have to stress about the financial element of it either. Once my son was strong enough and I felt confident leaving him with my parents, I would sneak off for a date with my husband or even a date with a girlfriend.

I had to FORCE myself to go because the mom-guilt was always strong.

My main source of personal therapy came in the form of a blog. A log of the journey, if you will. While I would sit in the hospital room, monitors beeping, TV & Wii going, my boy sleeping… I would type. I would pour out my heart through the keyboard of my laptop. Some days the posts were dark, raw, transparent. Other days they were full of faith and Scripture and hope. Sometimes the post was solely photos so people could watch the journey unfold.

Regardless of the content, the daily habit of writing out updates was cathartic.

I had learned this technique 8 years prior when my family experienced a tragedy of another kind. The blog was a way for me to update everyone who was interested in one place at one time. I was not fielding calls and talking so much I lost my voice this time. Plus, now I have a log of the journey that I can revisit for many reasons. I have gone back to find facts about his treatment, emotions I dealt with during the various phases, and often times it serves as a way for me to continue grieving in a seemingly healthy way.

Transparent thought: it is still VERY HARD to look back and see that sweet little face facing the fight of his life and hearing that little voice share what was on his mind.

Toward the end of his treatment, I discovered MaxLove Project. I’ve mentioned them in previous articles so they might sound familiar by now. They were creating a pilot program called BE SUPER Boot Camp. It was a way for moms to connect online in a group and spend 21 days focusing on THEMSELVES.
The BE SUPER Plan had 7 points, each scientifically backed and shown to help reduce the effects of stress. Isn’t that what every cancer parent needs during a journey like this? Yes, yes it is. I lunged at the opportunity to be a part of this pilot program, a sort of beta test, if you will.

It was incredible. I was introduced to things I hadn’t considered and I was revisiting things that I was already aware of. It had the added bonus of creating a personal community of like-“lifed” mommas who got it. They knew what I was feeling. Many had very similar journeys – children with the same diagnosis. Others were walking a different sort of journey BUT OUR EMOTIONS WERE THE SAME.

At the end of the Boot Camp, I knew I needed to be more involved with this organization and this sort of life-giving community. I went on to become a Momma Mentor with MaxLove Project and co-led a Boot Camp for blood cancer mommas. The program was still in a beta phase and each “glitch” was a beautiful learning opportunity. I loved this group of moms just as much as I loved the original batch. I am still connected to many of them today. This kind of community is what is severely lacking on a national level. It is my goal to change that. More on that later.

    Back to self-care.

    KEEP IT SIMPLE.
Self-care does not need to look like a fishing trip off-grid for a week at a time or a lavish cruise in the Mexican Riviera. It can simply be curling up on the couch with a book for 20 minutes. Spending the time to blow dry your hair instead of throwing it up into a ponytail still dripping wet. It could be splurging for the large/ venti/ bigger cup at your local coffee/ tea chain.

    KEEP IT FOCUSED.
Most people think of self-care in only the physical realm – does it feel good to my body? Example: manicures, massages, etc.
Do not forget about your emotional health. Does the self-care act bring you joy or anxiousness? We’re going for joy, in case you were confused. What about your spiritual health? Are you doing something that connects you to God? Prayer, meditation, worship music… all these can be self-care and they’re FREE. Your mental health. Does the self-care act require more mental energy? If you have to engage your mind a bunch your body will feel the effects and often not in a relaxing way.
What about your social health? Is the self-care act connecting you to the community that you may need to lean into for strength and support or is it pulling you further away which will make it harder to get help when you need/ want it?
These are just thoughts and ideas to get you thinking about how you can care for ALL OF YOU throughout the journey.

Each day has opportunities for you to care for a different part of you.

If you are struggling with how to care for YOU, let me walk you through 7 actions that you can keep on a back burner for when you need help directing your self-care thoughts.

    1. Positive thinking. I know this sounds gimmicky, but there is legitimate science to back up the importance and power of a positive mindset.
    2. Eating. Again, this can sound simple but this isn’t about comfort food. This is about nutrient-dense foods that fuel your body which will help ease the stress impact on your body, keep you healthy, and so much more.
    3. Sleep. You NEED good sleep. You need even more good sleep when you are stressed. Your body takes such a beating on a journey like childhood cancer parenting that your body needs all the time it can get to repair itself. Turn off tech, diffuse soothing essential oils, stretch before you try to fall asleep.
    4. Exercise. It doesn’t have to be CrossFit. It does have to be movement. A little spurt of something that gets your heart pumping and your lungs working.
    5. Meditation. This takes practice and it is one of the things that will positively impact you the most. Getting control of your mind is a huge task with great benefits.
    6. Community. Humans are social creatures and a cancer journey is a scenario that can easily pull us out and away from our community. Your community should be healthy, stable, strong… if you need to prune your community “garden”, so be it. Your thrivership is worth it.
    7. Detox your environment. You cannot heal in a toxic environment. Whether it be people, actual chemical toxins, or emotional toxicity… you need to address that, clean it up, and replace with cleaner options.

CANCER PARENTS: Go easy on yourself. If you are in this cancer journey you know how all-consuming it can be. Sure, you find a “new normal” and learn to walk in that but then you must allow yourself the grace and space to grieve the previous normal you knew. You need to acknowledge that this is NOT the way you saw your child’s life going and really walk through those emotions. You need a safe place to talk about the ugly with people who “get it”. There is power and encouragement in simply knowing you are not alone. If you desire that kind of community, or know someone who needs it, please reach out to Reimaging Healing and let’s get you plugged in… >Contact/ Support Group<  to find out more information.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! YOU CAN DO THIS! I BELIEVE IN YOU!

COMMUNITY MEMBERS: You are so important to cancer parents. You have a unique opportunity to serve a drastically under-served population who needs you more than ever before! Do you have a skillset or product that you could use to bless the parent(s) of a child fighting cancer? If yes, would you be willing to bless them? Please connect with Reimagine Healing (>Contact/ Cancer Parent Supporter<) and let us know what you are willing to do to support these parents.

  • Why You Should Do An Ayurvedic Spring Cleanse

As we (at least here in Idaho) watch the snow melt away (hopefully soon), we know Spring is on it’s way. This is the time of year Mother Earth renews herself, and celebrates with blooming flowers and new leaves.  While we aren’t always aware, our own bodies are also beginning to shift with the change of season. This is a great time to reset, restore and cleanse our mind and body with a seasonal cleanse to leave us healthier and stronger.

    What is an Ayurvedic “Cleanse?”

“De-Tox” and “cleanse” have different meanings to different people.  But don’t worry… when I speak of “cleanse,” I am not suggesting a starvation detox that consists of lemon water and fruit or juice. No fasting involved! An Ayurvedic cleanse is a time-tested, gentle cleansing approach that nourishes the body, while setting up an environment for the elimination of toxins.  Unlike many of the trendy detox diets and cleanses out on the market that do more harm than good, this cleanse will leave you rejuvenated. This sets you up for optimal health.  The best part?!  You get to eat simple, yet delicious foods with a variety of herbs and spices to optimize your digestion.  In an Ayurvedic cleanse there are three phases:

    1. The preparatory
    2. The cleanse
    3. The post-cleanse, where you reset your digestion to transition back into a diverse diet.

Ayurveda also places a strong emphasis on cleansing/rejuvenating self-care practices that will guide you to healthier habits to optimize your wellness.

    Why Cleanse?

The unfortunate reality is we live in a world full of toxic substances. In our food we find pesticides, antibiotics, microbes, mercury, and more – even if we are eating organic. Our air also carries pollutants, which then get absorbed into the body. The good news is our body has a system to detox. A cleanse will support this system, and – when done properly – will leave you feeling rejuvenated, and healthier than when you started.

    Cleanse Benefits

A cleanse comes with many benefits, in both mind and body: improved digestion, a sense of calm, and balanced sleep cycles. A cleanse will reset your natural balance, and you will feel rejuvenated!

    – Improve your digestion

    – Restore a sense of calm

    – Restore balanced sleep-cycles

    – Reset your natural balance

    – Cleanse and rejuvenate

Interesting in a cleanse?  I offer guided cleanses, and can do consultations in person or by phone.  For those of you in Valley County Idaho, I will be offering a guided group cleanse throughout the month of April.  For more information, please contact me at jean@theyogamomma.com

  • Lachlan Neylan: 22 month old severely brain damaged after a flu shot – Learn The Risk

Lachlan Neylan was a happy, walking and talking 22-month-old boy…until in March 2012 he was given a flu shot that almost cost him his life. He was left unable to walk or talk and suffered severe brain damage, including seizures and swelling of the brain, known as encephalopathy, after he was accidentally given a flu shot banned for children under age five in Australia, where this story takes place.

Lachlan began having seizures within hours of the shots. His parents were told he was unlikely to live, but he managed to pull through. But he will likely never walk or talk again.

He just collapsed and started to have seizures. Doctors said they thought our son wouldn’t make it through the weekend. It was terrifying,” said Lachlan’s father.

Before the injection, Lachlan had been a “walking, talking toddler.” After the flu shot, he stopped being able to sit, walk or talk  and “he was back to being a three-month-old,” according to his parents.

Fluvax (the shot given to Lachlan) had been banned for children under five in 2010 after it had been found to trigger febrile convulsions in one in every 100 children. Despite the ban the Department of Health confirmed the banned shot had been administered to 43 children under the age of five just that year. And the shot is regularly given to children older than five and adults.

We don’t want anyone else to go through what we have been through,” said Mr Neylan after speaking out to media.

The family’s home has now had to be turned into a rehabilitation centre for Lachlan, who is now faces a lifetime of disability. The family are yet to receive compensation for this injury that has completely changed their lives.

Studies show that the flu shot rarely protects people from getting the flu and that increased vaccination does NOT reduce mortality in any age group. “We could not correlate increasing vaccination coverage after 1980 with declining mortality rates in any age group. Because fewer than 10% of all winter deaths were attributable to influenza in any season, we conclude that observational studies substantially overestimate vaccination benefit.” (Study published in Archives of Internal Medicine)

So is that flu shot really worth the REAL risk? Just to escape a few days of rest… Think twice before rolling up your sleeve. Actually think three times, four times, five times….

  • Parasites Were Killing Me! – Lindsey’s Story of Healing After a Parasite Cleanse (UPDATED)

Parasites mimic neurological disorder such as M.S. and emotional instability anxiety and panic attacks. Lindsey, mother of three young children, dealt with these symptoms for eight months and was rapidly getting worse. Her medical bills piling up as allopathic doctors were looked to only relieve the symptoms as they were unable to find the source of her degenerating health. Her muscle spasms became so severe she had to limit walking and was forced to use a cane. She admits that her emotional instability had her uncontrollably snapping at her young children, which left her guilt ridden. Then, at a point of desperation, she started a parasite cleanse. This video tells her story miraculously within 7 days, she began to see transforming results.

    Parasites were killing me!

Posted by Lindsey Turner on Sunday, March 4, 2018

No mother should have to to go through this. I’m beyond blessed to get a second chance and to share this message.    After reading more about parasites and how they attack the body we knew it was the cause of all my health issues. Then as I continually passed them, I was feeling better each day. I showed my Internal Medicine Doctor what I had passed and he said in his opinion, it looked just like a tape worm.  But without proper testing, he couldn’t say for sure. However, given my immediate results he believes it was parasites as well. Our bodies are capable of working hard on constantly trying to repair itself. Our gut is also know as the second brain, some even say the first. So with that in mind, if I have parasites eating my nutrition you can see the spider web effect that begins to unveil.

  • 9 reasons we have a “sick”, not “health care” system

The conventional medical system and hospitalized care is now in the Top 3 leading causes of mortality, as announced by Johns Hopkins University in 2016.

Does this sound like a system you would choose to participate in?

Here are 9 reasons we have a “sick” and not a “health care” system:

    1. Any system which forces the population to seek and/or use only one methodology or approach to treatment for addressing health issues or face denial of coverage, is not “health care”.

When there is only one accepted method of treating health care issues (via drugs or surgery, for example), when consumers lack education, choices and freedom about their health, this is not health care

Any time there is a risk to a treatment or medical procedures, there needs to be a choice. When we are forced to accept treatments that don’t heal our bodies or solve health care problems, and we continue to participate in treatment that doesn’t solve the problem, we are trapped in a system that effectively keeps patients and consumers in a state of being unwell.

    2. Any system which penalizes those who chose to go outside the system for “alternatives” or holistic treatment, is not “health care”.

Punishing citizens by forcing them to pay into a system which they do not want to participate is not a free society and not only falls under the category of discrimination, but is a direct violation of human rights. Reasoning that our health care system is too costly for certain members of its population to afford it is not justification to mandate citizens to fund or participate in a system. There’s a word for this: it’s called fascism.

If leaders of the health care industry possessed a sincere desire to make wellness achievable and accessible to all, they would advocate for holistic health alternatives, education and treatment. If these leaders were willing to provide information to patients and consumers that would allow them to experience wellness, we would see dramatic changes in our death and disease rates.

Instead, what we have is a system that continues to create dependencies on drugs, surgery and other treatments that are costly and don’t heal or contribute to recovery. Making these changes would significantly impact the overall cost of health because less of our population would be sick and thus would be using medical services. This is the definition of a “sick care” system, and it is extremely profitable for the corporations involved.

(As an aside, it’s fair to call it an industry since it generates profit, and quite a lot of it. According to Statistic Brain, the health care industry generates $1.668 trillion annually. Let that sink in.)

    3. Any system that uses treatments that manage rather than heal, and fails to improve health or well-being of its subscribers or members is not  “health care”.

Drugs, surgery, and other procedures do not prevent future health issues nor resolve the root of the problem. Instead, those who receive such treatments and are administered pharmaceutical products become looped into a system that requires continual appointments and treatment, vaccines, and renewal of drug prescriptions. This is not wellness, but “managed illness”. All drugs have side-effects which can cause a downward spiral of health issues, and still no resolution of the cause of the original health problem.

    4. Any system that refuses to cover care that goes outside the scope of the conventional medical model, or attempts to discredit other modes of medical or health treatments is not “health care”.

The majority of insurance providers do not provide coverage for complimentary or holistic treatments. Instead, most covered services include only conventional treatments.

When patients seek medical advice and are told that if they do not follow the recommendations provided they will be dismissed as a patient or are endangering themselves or their child of further disease or death, this is not health care.

What motivation would there be for a system to continually attempt to tarnish or invalidate other types of health care other than to protect its own interests? There’s really only one answer to this: profits and power.

    5. Any system that relies upon drugs, surgery, vaccines and other similar treatments to treat health care issues does not support wellness. This reactionary, rather than preventative approach, is not “health care”.

Although sometimes we do need drugs or surgery, these should be exceptions to the rule of health treatments; not what we use for every health care scenario. We are not drug, vaccine, or surgery deficient.

The conventional medical model does not educate its patients on preventative habits or lifestyle choices that could lead to wellness. Instead, it recommends taking prescriptions to manage symptoms, consumption of a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet with more plants and grains, increased exercise, and diagnostics including mammography and colonoscopy for “prevention” of disease.

Low-fat diets have actually been shown to lead to health issues, and no amount of exercise will create health in someone who is unwell and not addressing existing nutritional deficiencies in their body from consuming a low-fat diet. Contrary to what we’ve been told for decades, cholesterol is actually essential for for every aspect of health including cell structure, hormones, digestion, weight management, stress, brain function, metabolism and more. It’s the source of that cholesterol which makes the difference: cholesterol from animal foods that come from confinement operations versus organically-grown, pasture-raised environments are completely opposite on the spectrum. We can definitely expect to experience disease and chronic health issues from consuming the former, while choices from the second can be extremely beneficial and health-supporting.

Diagnostics such as colonoscopies and mammograms involve risk due to exposing tissue to radiation and compression (which can lead to cancer), drug reactions, and perforation of human tissue.

Each of these recommendations can and have lead to further incidence of disease, yet are advocated and endorsed by conventional medical practitioners and guidelines. Preventative diagnostics have been known to fail to detect or prevent the disease that is being screened. Read more about mammograms from Dr. Mercola.

    6. Any system that engages in bullying, coercion, threats, intimidation, discouragement of research and education, or disregards empowerment toward the patient or consumer is not “health care”.

Patients and consumers regularly report receiving condescending, disrespectful, bullying and unfair treatment by practitioners when they decline or request more information on specific types of treatment. Any practitioner that engages in this type of behavior or approach is not practicing “health care”.

    7. Any system which repeatedly discredits, undermines or disesteems medical doctors, nurses, scientists and others including holistic practitioners who have taken their education and research outside of conventional approaches and treatments and gained an understanding of the importance of holistic approaches to address health care issues is not a “health care system”.

When a doctor or practitioner goes outside of accepted answers or language about a treatment or procedure, the typical response is that said individual is not credible or has a soiled reputation, is a “quack”, or is discredited in some other way. In some cases, the individual may be targeted to lose his or her license, or may even die in a mysterious manner. Are these deaths simply coincidences? Erin from Health Nut News did an expose on the more than 70 health practitioners who died between 2015 and 2016 from unexplained causes.

    8. Any system which denies the existence of studies and research showing risks and flaws within the conventional health care approach is not “health care”.

There are thousands upon thousands of studies and papers revealing the risks of conventional care approaches, yet many who are confronted with this information or evidence will dismiss and attempt to discredit those who bring this information to light. Why do those within the conventional system fight so vehemently against this information? Why do the defenders of the conventional medical system use the same arguments again and again, and without unbiased, scientific documentation? These responses beg the question: if you want to know who is oppressing you, find out who you are not allowed to question or raise skepticism toward. What do these staunch defenders have to worry about if the risks and flaws of the medical system, challenged by those who aren’t satisfied with the status quo, are wrong?

    9. Any system whose practitioners and representatives oppose parents who provide testimonials of children who have experienced vaccine-injury or death is not “health care”.

There are literally tens of thousands of parents who have shared their stories about how vaccines have damaged or killed their children, many of them with similar symptoms and reactions. The majority of representatives in the conventional health care system insist that these parents are incorrect, uneducated, hysterical, irrational, abusive, “conspiracy-theory driven” or even criminals. Most parents who question vaccines were pro-vaccine at one time. The reason they began to question is because they experienced the tragedy of a vaccine-injured or dead child. This is not a place that most parents would ever want to find themselves in; and yet, more and more are having to endure that very scenario. Those parents wish more than anything that they could go back in time and make a different decision. Sadly, once a vaccine is administered, it cannot be “un-given”.

Although we are assured otherwise, the science is not settled. If science is not allowed to be tested, questioned, or challenged, then we are clearly stifled and arrested as a civilization which cannot move forward in its acquisition and understanding of knowledge and information. The conventional medical system is by no means a “gold standard”. There have been and continue to be examples of those who use it and experience suffering and death as a result of their choice … and yet we are expected to regard this system as infallible and as possessing a guarantee about how to treat and “cure” illness when it appears more than obvious that it is anything but that level of reliable or sound.

Recommended ways to maintain wellness are as follows:

    • Eat a diet of real, organic, nourishing foods including grassfed meats, pasture-raised poultry and eggs and raw dairy foods, organic or pesticide, herbicide and genetically-modified-free fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and other foods .
    • Eliminate sugars, grains, processed and packaged food products.
    • Prepare foods at home, from scratch using ingredients rather than jars, packages, or prepared meals.
    • Consider traditional preparation of foods such as fermentation (sauerkraut, pickles, yogurt, kefir, sour cream), slow-cooking on low heat meats, fish and poultry using homemade meat broth and stocks from bones, vegetables, sea salt and filtered water. These methods render foods more nutritious and easier-to-digest as well as heal the digestive tract to enable higher absorption rate of nutrients.
    • Eliminate toxins from your environment including commercial cleaners, detergents, air fresheners, candles, shampoos, deodorant, toothpaste, soaps, body, beauty, and personal care products. Opt for natural products or make your own at home. Many cleaning and personal care products are easy to make at home with a few ingredients including kitchen and bathroom cleaners made with apple cider vinegar and baking soda, or plain vinegar and lemon juice, deodorant made with coconut oil and essential oils (such as lavender, lemongrass or peppermint), body butter made with equal parts of coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil and cocoa butter.

When we eat better, we feel better and tend to get sick less often. Less illness leads to a healthier body and less chance of long-term, chronic illness such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, brain fog, memory issues, obesity, inflammation, and other auto-immune disorders.

    Health share programs

Here is a list of health share programs that offer health care “coverage” for less than the average insurance plan (especially if you factor in the penalty for not participating), and provide you and your family with a means to lower expenses that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to manage on your own.

These are not insurance companies, they are share programs that provide coverage to members when needed. Members of these groups are by definition “exempt” from penalties imposed if you opt out of the Affordable Care Act (ACA aka “Obamacare”).
